Title: dopamine/cluster connection
Post by Granny Arizona on Apr 3rd, 2011 at 3:30pm
I had a "hunch" that my antidepressant Wellbutrin (which I really think helps my overall well being) might have a part in causing cluster and migraine headaches.  I found it very well might.  Wellbutrin affects the "reuptake" of dopamine... and according to what I discovered, a high dopamine count is found in cluster headache sufferers.

I'm wondering of any of you might also be on Wellbutrin.  I seriously hate to discontinue this drug.  It has been a God send for my stress and depression issues.  Still, I would give it up if I felt is could be causing these debilitating headaches.

I just wanted to put this out there to see if it might merit discussion.

Conclusions.-Our results support the hypothesis that the dopaminergic system is impaired in migraine and cluster headache and suggest that high platelet levels of dopamine may represent an abnormal biochemical phenotypic trait of these primary headaches.

Have a painfree day everyone!

I had bad clusters for years.  Finally broke down and was prescribed topamax.  It works very well for me on a small dose, 50mg.  That was about 2 years ago.   Last June ish started Zoloft, with the topamax.
Last week I started Welbutrin cause I did not like the side effects of zoloft.

No change here so far.   Still feeling good.   I guess I should add, that I am still taking the Zoloft for another week, and then I am going to taper off.
