I have lost my corneas due to their softening from the use of imitrex.

I know this is the 3rd. question I posed in as many days, but sometimes I get questions at Family services that make me scratch my head.

This is what I found in the insert:

Quote:
Corneal Opacities: Sumatriptan causes corneal opacities and defects in the corneal epithelium in dogs; this raises the possibility that these changes may occur in humans. While patients were not systematically evaluated for these changes in clinical trials, and no specific recommendations for monitoring are being offered, prescribers should be aware of the possibility of these changes (see CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY: Corneal Opacities).

Good thing Jimi didn't find that answer for you - he usually gets $2.00.

So you're saying you've met someone who has actually lost there corneas from imitrex use?

Not met, exactly.  He sent me an e-mail through my Family Services for OUCH, and yes,  He says he lost his corneas.

Seriously, I'm not saying don't worry about this happening to you, but, really, the fear of this happening is not a reason NOT to use a tripan.

I think anyone here would say...moderation.  They've certainly been known to cause rebounds and who the hell wants that.  Out and about, especially in public with no other way to abort, it's a Godsend.  Every day...no way.

BTW... I sent that guy all the info and help I could re: Imitrex use.  I have YET to hear back from him.  Guess he didn't like what I had to say.    :-/

The thing that gets to me is that I've never heard of this, ever.  I've been chronic for at least a couple years now.  Oxygen has not seemed to work, keep tweaking the procedure and hoping I can get it to, but no luck so far.  So I've been on just about the maximum dose of trex for at least 3 years now---And NO ONE has ever mentioned that it might make me blind?  You always hear about heart problems or serotonin syndrome, but blindness?  No way.  I love how doctors act like they know what they're doing and really just prescribe poisonous junk they don't know nearly enough about.  Regardless of how likely it is too happen, any time a  doctor prescribes you a medication that could potentially make you blind they should tell you of the risk.  But that would be asking doctors to actually work, and research the poison they dole out by the spoonful.  Friggin shmucks...Yup I'm pissed.  And I'm making an appointment with an eye doctor :(

Here's another report.  It appears that there are no known problems of this nature in humans (dogs only at this point).

Corneal Opacities: Dogs receiving oral sumatriptan developed corneal opacities and defects in the corneal epithelium. Corneal opacities were seen at the lowest dosage tested, 2 mg/kg/day, and were present after 1 month of treatment. Defects in the corneal epithelium were noted in a 60-week study. Earlier examinations for these toxicities were not conducted and no-effect doses were not established; however, the relative exposure at the lowest dose tested was approximately 5 times the human exposure after a 100-mg oral dose or 3 times the human exposure after a 6-mg subcutaneous dose.

The above is also in the insert for Imitrex injections (Sagent Pharmaceuticals).

Guess we can't say that anymore...

Ricardo, I also asked him that.  He said he was taking 4 injections per day for the several months his cycle lasted.  I believe another reason he never answered me back after the 2nd. e-mail was because I flat out told him he was taking too much and the dosage  should be..no more than 2 per day.   In my opinion, even that is too high.

The thing is that even if the original gentleman 'lost' his corneas due to softening -

1) according to the literature below, corneal opacities/defects are the risk with extreme tripan use (at least in dogs).  Not softening (although I admit, I'm not sure what the gentleman meant by 'softening'.)

2) We have no real way of knowing if this gentleman's cornea issues are directly secondary to his tripan use.

Again - I would emphasize moderation in all medication use.  Medications are powerful and there are no absolutes - nothing is 100% safe or side effect free under all circumstances.  Only risks of medication vs. benefits of medications.

It's been said that I might have been a bit rough here, and maybe I was...Sorry if I offended anyone.  I know there are good doctors and bad doctors.  My doctor is great in some ways, not so great in other ways.  He's been my doctor since I was 8, so I've been hesitant to switch...but he's just too busy (he's the CEO of the hospital now, doesn't see many patients anymore) to really give me the level of attention I've needed.  So in some ways I guess it's my own fault, I know what I need but haven't taken the steps to get there.  I'm sure some of this comes from my experiences when I was dealing with epilepsy.  The Doctors threw all sorts of poison at me that didn't work, and it didn't ever really seem like the point was to find out why I was having them.  Just through dope at them until they stop.  When I did enough research myself I found links between gluten allergies and epilepsy and cured myself.  My Doctor's still convinced that they "miraculously" disappeared.
I think that's my major beef with the health care industry and doctors.  It's a given that doctors are supposed to make lot's of money.  Think your doctor would have more time to research your clusters if he took a smaller paycheck and had less patients?  I do.

Sorry If I offended anyone, or high jacked a thread--back on point--As far as the corneal softening only happening with dogs that had extreme amounts of Imitrex, that might not be true.  It said they found the effect in the lowest dosage tested.  Who knows how much it takes to have happen.  (obviously a bit though, cause we're not all blind)
