Melatonin. It's an over the counter sleep aid available at health food, vitamin stores and pharmacies. Start with 9 mg about 30 minutes before bed time. Some go as high as 15 mg a night to get relief. Takes up to a week to start working so be patient. Some on the board split the dose in half, take 5 mg regular release and 5 mg etended release. They say it gets them through the whole night.

This link is now required reading for all CH'ers! We've radically changed HOW we use oxygen to abort attacks and the success rate has gone through the roof. If you've never used 02, or used it in the past and it didn't work, you owe it to yourself to read it and try it. Abort times are running 4-8 minutes for many. Worth a shot. Sorry beasty is back.

What Joe said  :), plus I've seen some folks report that they've had to go up to 18 or even 21 mg of melatonin before they found relief.

Some have reported success with taking a triptan tab at night as a nocturnal preventative. I've never done that, but as I said, some have found nighttime relief that way. lance

Jimmy,

I've had good luck with melatonin.  I let two 3mg tabs dissolve under my tongue every night about 45 minutes before bed.  No night hits under this regimen.  Without the melatonin, I am guaranteed to get a rude 4AM wakeup call.

One thing I've noticed though, is that not all melatonin is created equal.  I tried taking a single 10mg caplet that you swallow (instead of dissolving sublingually) and that didn't do jack for me.  It was a different brand than I normally take.  I think my girlfriend bought it at the local health foods market.  If one brand doesn't work for you, try a different one.

The brand I usually buy is from Whole Health - START PRINTPAGEMultimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or RegisterEND PRINTPAGE .  Its about $8 for 120 tabs.

Good luck,
Ken

There was a thread awhile back that went into the differences between types of melatonin.

It was generally agreed that the "good stuff" is

n-Acetyl-5-Methoxytryptamine.

Some people take a combo of both the immediate release (to get to sleep right away) and the time-release (to stay asleep).

I've never had any luck with melatonin but the gel Hot/Cold pack is a goer for me.
When I am shadowing heavy & suspect that I may get hit I go to bed with a frozen one in it's cotton bag on my cluster side & it works a treat.

Cheers
Barry

Like Barry I've never had any luck with melatonin.

I take an allergy pill (such and Zyrtec/Cetirizine) before bed which has helped avoid many night time hits.
