Quote:
I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty, and justice for all.

I find it hard to see how anyone has a problem with this.   I guess some do, just don't see why.

Because some people have made a lifestyle - dare I even say a career - out of being perpetually offended.

I know several people like that. I found it undemocratic (politically) and annoying (personally). lance

I remember back in 1954 (yes, I am that old - I was about 8 in 54) when the words "under God" were added to the pledge.

Every day, through earlier elementary school years, standing straight upright with hand over our hearts,  we recited the Pledge of Allegiance.  Then, when school started in 54, the very first thing we all had to do was memorize the new pledge, inserting "under God".  We didn't know why, but that was the first thing we all had to learn by heart.

Frankly, I don't care whether these words are in the pledge or not.  This, at least to me, is a non-issue.  Whether anybody likes it or not, the words "under God" are part of the pledge now, by law.

Have a problem with the word "God"? - God is whoever you want him/her to be.  A supreme power, maker of earth and everything on it, the biggest Marlin in the ocean on the end of your line, or the tiniest cell that evolved into humans.

It's just a word that too many people put too much emphasis on to push their own personal belief on those who think differently.

Off soap box now.

Sandy

Some people search for things to be offended by.

I was at a Cinqo De Mayo dinner and someone was offended because the Miriachi band was wearing sombreros and fake mustaches.

HUH??

Sandy I'm with you (and I do remember 1954 also)... I remember we had flags in the classrooms and said the Pledge each morning and had "prayer" in the classrooms also. We also had ONE flag flying in front of the school and we all KNEW Flag PROTOCOL.

We knew the words to the National Anthem and "God Bless America"... we knew who was President (kids today don't).

We were brought up to be patriotic and to love our country and our heritage. We were also brought up to respect our elders and to "think" for ourselves.

If the word "God" offends anyone - then they have a problem - not me. And I think the damn government has spent way too much time worrying about it.

Off my soapbox now also..  :-*

All U.S. currency has the word God on it.
For all those offended by the word [Eugene residents or otherwise],
you just go ahead & send me your money.

I wouldn't want you to be uncomfortable or anything
nor do I want you to compromise your "beliefs".

;)

I never get this thing. It never bothers me.

My immediate family wasn't very religious but it's one of those things that was way down on my parent's list of something to worry about. I was 8 years old in 1954. It took at least 30 years before it became something I noticed.

You know, there really are bigger things to worry about.
