Title: Different Pain - A Quick Survey
Post by ReneeM on Aug 4th, 2011 at 1:46am
Hi Everyone,

I have a quick survey for ya. If you think about Cluster headaches on a 1 to 10 scale, and 10 being your normal worst Cluster, I'm curious about other pains that people consider 'extreme', and where they fit on that 1 -10 scale.

So, for example, I once (many years ago) had kidney stones. Now granted, my perception of pain then is much different to what it is now. At the time I would have called it a 10, but now I would place it at about a 5 in comparison to a cluster headache.

I've personally not give birth, but I wonder where birth ranks on the scale.

Broken bone?

What else? What else can go on the scale in comparison to what the demon can deliver? Does anything else go off the scale? Is the saying true, that this is the most extreme pain known to man?

There are no wrong answers, and it's OK if you're perception is different to someone else's. Everyone perceives pain differently.

Thank you muchly,
Renée

Compared to a cluster attack?

35 midgets caving in my skull with ball peen hammers rates around a 1.

For me, the KIP scale begins where the 1-10 pain scale ends. lance

Well, I have given birth (with no antisetic) and I'll take that one over CH anytime (although at the time..... :) well men are NOT highly thought of at this time in a woman's life!)

Seriously childbirth dims in comparrison to CH...

Before CH (I have trouble remembering back that far sometimes) pain and I did not get along. I was a WIMP totally - couldn't handle a hangnail very well.. but since CH - well - other pains just don't hit the scale anymore...  :-*

I've given birth 7 times.  It ranks at about a 5 for me.

Ditto!!
Child birth for me in comparison to CH would be about a 3.

What irritates me is when I tell a doctor that I am in pain (if other than CH) for instance my back...I have a bad back...Anyway what irritates me is when I tell a doctor that I am in pain and he fobbs it off like it's BS.  Then I have to explain that I have CH (if they don't already know) and let them know, that I know what PAIN is and when I say I'm in it "I'm IN IT!"

My back pain doesn't compare to CH pain, it's pain, but different pain (deal-able pain) but that doesn't mean that it's any easier to function with that pain either.

Over my 65 years of life, I've had a myriad of "stuff" that at the time, I thought was horrific pain.

Three abdominal surgeries - the first one in 1965 didn't hurt one bit because I was doped up so high on morphine, I was a very happy camper (this is one reason that I never used any recreational drugs).

It's also why the following two abdominal surgeries, five knee operations (one a total replacement - the physical therapy after surgery was a killer), other than the anesthetic to put me out while on the table, I refused pain meds other than Tylenol the day after my surgeries.

I've also had two completely natural childbirths with nothing, and had 7 compressed vertebrae and one broken one in my back - over a year of chiropractic "adjustments" (I called them torture), I'm fine now - again, took only Tylenol or Ibuprophen.

In 1999, along came CH.  That is when I learned what REAL pain was.

No comparison

I recently punched a hole in my right hand and tore my extensor tendon when I lost an argument with a lawn tractor and trailer hitch. Then I had surgery to repair the damage. I was given vicodin and I just look at the bottle, pop a couple of Advil, and thank God I'm not having any real pain, like a CH.  Blessings. lance

I used to reach across my head with my left hand, place my hand on my right temple and pull my head down onto my shoulder during an attack.  I quit doing that when I heard my rotator cuff tear, but I didn't feel it until afterwards.

I broke my second toe on Saturday night when I forgot we moved the dining room table and walked into it in the dark.  I wore wingtips to church on Sunday morning.  I put that about a 5.
