Today I was shaken...Frankly I preferred to be Stirred.

Edited because I forgot to add... Yes we felt it and it wasn't wimpy... people from upstairs in our building came running out. Copiers that way a ton and vending machines were a wobbling not to mention cubicles and monitors. |

Pic of devastation from DC:
All that devastation in DC will probably cost the taxpayers million$ to repair. |

Really all this excitement over a 5.8 quake??? Come on East Coast, we have those for breakfast out here!!!! :D
I think we're pretty used to earthquakes here on the West Coast, so we ignore most of them. But, I'm honestly glad we don't have hurricanes, blizzards, and tornadoes. Those freak me out. 8-) |

A 5.8 will definately get your attention. It would even have Californicators moving toward the door.

A geologist was on TV in San Diego this morning. Said a 5.8 back east was felt harder, and farther then we'd have felt it here. Our crust is criss crossed with faults, and the earth quakes dissipate fast. Back east, it's rock solid and the waves travel uninterrupted! :o
So you're forgiven for running in circles screaming the sky is falling. ;D Joe |

I was at work in MA. My co workers, recovering from recent tornado, bracing for Irene, were no amused. We didn't feel it like in VA, but it was a good roller.

Just talked to a friend who works on a fifth floor, it was felt here. A quake felt for the first time can be a startling uneasy moment if thinking it's just you and worrying what's going on. About everybody here would be strange to quaking. One previous experience with a shaker in Cal and the cables swaying overhead helped him situate the unordinary feeling even a small tremor has, usually to ask wide-eyed, "Did you feel that?"

I totally agree with you. My first experience of an earthquake was in Wales, UK (magnitude 5.4) and I had zero idea what was happening. Since I was camping next to a railway line, I thought a train had derailed and yet I was confused on looking out of the tent to see everything looking normal, until I saw a newspaper later that day. You just don't forget your first time! Once you've experienced a few you can instantly recognize what is happening, just hoping that it stays relatively mild and doesn't get any worse. |
