Title: Heat-trigger for cycle? Post by LasVegas on Aug 26th, 2011 at 10:27pm
Record breaking heat in Las Vegas this week...110+ F temp
No A/C in my car...+10F Am businessman/outside sales driving at least 5 hrs/day. Long sleeved shirt, tie, long pants, etc...+10F = Hot & Sweaty! Feel stiff neck all week and am getting hit as I type. Just slammed a RedBull, hyperventilated w/ face against my turbo speed house fan. Helped abit, but OUCH! :( Left side pain-temple, jaw, eye, stiff neck, no drooping yet, runny nostril. Haven't been able to afford a regulator for welders o2. No $ til 9/5th to order which will take at least 2 weeks to deliver once ordered. No medical insurance. I do have Imitrex injections & nasal sprays but not wanting to use them if I don't have to. Also have Pred and Verapamil but don't want to start if I don't have to. Tough waiting game to determine how near future plans may be altered... Really hope this is not the beginning of a cycle. This is the 3rd hit (KIP 1 - 4) in last 2 weeks for 1st time in 5 yrs. Started "123 days regimen" yesterday. Single parent here 24/7/365 w/ 11 yr old to care for who starts middle school this Monday. Need to make most use of my time while PF and always productive, never a lazy moment, well overdue but not with the beast again. Pain is subsiding abit...feel exhausted and these past 20 minutes was only a KIP 3. Thought my pain tolerance was higher, this better not happen again! :-/ Wonder if there are studies on how heat may act as a trigger to cycle!? |

What's the reason for not using Verap ? Preventing attacks seems more attractive than treating one--and cheaper.
==== Lancet. 1999 Sep 18;354(9183):1001-2. Comment in: Lancet. 2000 Jan 8;355(9198):147. A new cluster headache precipitant: increased body heat. Blau JN, Engel HO. Exercise, a hot bath, or elevated environmental temperature provoked cluster headaches, within 1 h, in 75 out of 200 patients. This new observation accords with recognised precipitants--alcohol, histamine, and gyceryl trinitrate--perhaps via generalised vasodilatation or hypothalamic activation. Thanks for sharing about the heat Bob. Hopefully others have more info to share on heat as a trigger to cycle??
BobJ....You ask what's wrong w/ Verap? I am already taking Clonidine which is also a BP med used for Opiate withdrawals. Can not take 2 BP meds. Clonidine is the only med my dr prescribes for opiate withdrawals. I'm stuck not taking Verap until I no longer have withdrawals and am only in the beginning stages of tapering down opiates/begin withdrawals. Can't imagine how I would cope w/ a CH cycle and withdrawals at the same time. |

Should have mentioned: an old preventive for heat induced attacks is 1mg SL tab of ergotamine. Take about one-hour before the activity which raises your body temp.
Question is whether it's available or not. Keeps cycling on and off the market. |

Hey bob very interesting I never heard of the ergotamine before excersising. I have been avoiding excercise ans getting some sun at the beach cause I find that heat is a trigger for me. Do you think it would be a good choice to try before going to the beach as a prevent? thanks Anthony |

If you can get it, yes. But this is one med where you have to be attentive to the maximum weekly use. Too much can lead to a circulatory problem. Beyond that caution, it was used for decades in the era before triptans.
