Title: Verapamil side effects
Post by Graemel on Sep 11th, 2011 at 1:52am
I am on 240 gm per day in 2 tablets. I have not had a CH for around one month now so it is working. I do get the occasional dizzy spells. Not enough to make me fall down but i have to pause what I am doing. Has anyone else experienced this or any other side effects of verapamil? I am visiting my dr next week for a review of my dosage etc and would be glad for any advice from here prior to my appointment.

It could be low blood pressure.

I'd get your GP to measure it plus do an ECG if you've not had one in the last 6 months or so.

Do mention this to him.

Yes, most likely it has lowered your blood pressure just enough to trigger this response.

Until you see your doc and discuss--when you stand up, don't move for a few seconds. This will allow your BP to stabilize/recover and you are less likely to have any problems walking. One of those issues that you learn to cope with by "listening" to you body.

Hi Graemel,

I've never experienced that while on Verapamil. , but the advise given to see you physician is recommended. Rule out any other possibilities.

All the best and glad to hear you're Pain free.

Yes, I know this side effect very well. My BP is normal, but what happens due to the verapamil is called START PRINTPAGEMultimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or RegisterEND PRINTPAGE

Check with your doc, mostly harmless!

Thanks for the help guys. I will certainly get her to check my BP sitting and standing.

You've had good advice here.  The only thing I can add to it is that if it continues you might want to switch to Kudzu, an over the counter Chinese herbal that a number of us have had good success with.  I got as good results with it as I did with Verap and Lithium together, but without the side effects.

YMMV

Hey Graemel,

I've had the same side-effects, although a bit more intense (ie: passing out in the shower). Not that great, but I'll take that over CHs anyday!

Hopefully a review of the dosage will fix things for you!

Same as Cadz here: passed out in the shower.
BP was low, and doc warned not to go above 480mg, but too much pain so I decided to up to 600mg anyway.

In the mean time I switched to methysergide. I get by on 2mg/day and it helps for 100%, something verap. even at best never did.

Hey guys once again thanks for all the info. Passing out in the shower sounds serious. I saw my GP and she says the cold feet is almost certainly due to the increased dose of verapamil. I am on 240mg per day. 2 tablets. she also had a swipe about nicotine. lol but she didnt sound convincing. the cold feet only came about after I incresed the dosage of V. she recommends when I am comfortable with it to reduce dosage back to 120mg per day which is what I started with. I have not had a CH now for almost 2 months but have had the precursor of weeping eye a couple of times. Thankfully it never developed into an episode. So I have not taken a cafergot tablet for the period however I still have them with me at all times.
