Title: Broken StatDose Pen Post by LasVegas on Oct 4th, 2011 at 3:12pm
Imitrex Statdose pen broke.
I've got Imitrex, but now have no pen to inject. No health insurance. Called Glaxo who says they do not offer replacement pens and I would require a prescription for the entire kit (pen, carrying care & med). Glaxo had me take a look at the bottom of the carrying case and told me because it read an expiration 2007-2008, they are not responsible. F**K THEM! >:( Not up for the 600 mile drive to Mexico border where I last got my Statdose kit. Anybody got an extra pen? If so, please PM me Has anybody been successful with manually using insulin type or other small syringe needles and sucking the med from the Imitrex vial and injecting on your own? This is the only way I see feasible without a statdose pen. Anybody try this successfully? If so, please share with all how to do this and what type of syringe to get from pharmacy. |

The stat dose kits don't have vials in them that you can draw the med out of into another needle. You'd literally have to break the glass without spilling all the med just to get to the med and then you're going to have tiny pieces of glass mixed in with the med. I have used Imitrex vials before, many times, and yes it does the same thing. The only difference is that you have to draw up the med and inject it manually. It's actually a little less painful using small SubQ syringes and with the Imitrex vials, you can get and take whatever size dose you may require (ie... 4mg or 6mg ...or less).
If you felt it was necessary to do so, the prefilled syringes in the stat dose systems can be taken out (although it might be hard to do without the pen and you'd probably want to 'practice' a way to get it out of there before an actual attack occured). Once the small prefilled syringe is out of there, you can inject the medication in you using a Q-tip or some other small object to push the med out of the syringe and SubQ into you. TAKE NOTE: I'M NOT A DOCTOR AND I AM NOT SUGGESTING YOU DO ANY OF THIS. I'M JUST TELLING YOU THIS FOR INFORMATIONAL PURPOSES ONLY (That it can be done!) Good Luck !! |

Thanks for the info. It did seem rather difficult to do this manually.
I have received a couple PM replies offering to mail me a pen and sincerely thank you, you know who you are ;) For those reading this that use Imitrex, one might consider stocking up on extra pens so you don't run into living nightmarish emergency situations like me. |

What was described above is the imitrex tip using the vial and needle from a stat dose kit, and a Qtip. I do it all the time. It triples the doses of a one time use stat pen to 3 2mg doses. Not so hard but takes some getting used to. Even with a new pen coming, I'd recommend trying it. Blessings. lance
