Dangerous animals on the loose in Ohio

Oct. 19, 2011, 11:23 a.m. EDT

Ohio police armed with assault rifles were on the hunt Wednesday for dozens of potentially dangerous wild animals that were released from a Zanesville wildlife preserve by their owner, who later committed suicide, according to media reports. Roughly 48 animals are believed to have escaped the privately-owned preserve, located roughly 50 miles east of Columbus. The animals include wolves, grizzly bears, tigers, and cheetahs. As of Wednesday morning 39 of the animals had been reportedly shot by police, while personnel from the nearby Columbus Zoo attempted to subdue others with tranquilizer darts or lure them back to their pens with food. Area schools, along with many local businesses, have been closed until further notice. Ohio officials have likewise advised that residents stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel until further notice.

Strange situation with the owner

The first reports I heard was that the owner was killed by the animals.  This throws a whole different light on the situation if he committed suicide.

Ohio apparently has VERY lax laws regarding the public owning dangerous animals like this.  This would never happen in Calif.  It sure would have been a happier outcome if the responding police had tranquilizer guns when they got there instead of rifles, but I understand that public safety was their main concern.

The whole thing is sad and like you said kevin..very strange.

He had to know their fate if he let them loose.  Terrible.

The killing of so many animals, including 18 Bengal tigers - an endangered species - prompted outrage from around the world, but Sheriff Lutz has said it was the only viable option to ensure the public was protected.

I'd have to agree with the sheriff, though.  There were too many dangerous animals to wait for enough zoo handlers to try to round them up.  Hesitating in the matter would be deadly, they'll have to eat.  A school nearby would be awful.

Going out to my car in the early dawn for work...

"Oh look, Mrs. Biddle replaced her garden gnome with a tiger crouching in the bushes."

Sergeant: Okay, grab whatever high power rifles we  have and try to find 60 man eating animals, in the dark, and kill them before they eat you or any innocent citizens. And kill them ALL before 7:00 am when the little kiddies..aka hors' doeuvres  ;).....will be headed to school.......

Joe, don't bring experience, common sense and rational thinking into an emotional arguement like this. What were you thinking???

I believe law enforcement did what they had to do.  One child being mauled or killed would have sent the area into a panic.

I did have a small laugh at some of the 911 tapes.  One woman said "I'm pretty sure I just saw a wolf in the parking lot."  Just sounded so tentative and unreal . . . .  :)
