Title: Are my cluster headaches back or is this different
Post by Shelby on Nov 8th, 2011 at 5:08pm
I was diagnosed with Cluster Headaches about 10 years ago.  They were excruciating and the worst pain I had ever had.  Luckily, Imitrex shots usually worked well enough for me and they would subside.  I had them on and off for months and then they just went away.  I have occasionally had the sharp ice pick pains in the right side of my head, but they don't last long enough to even bother with them.  It is the same shooting pain, but nothing like what I experienced before- and always followed by cold/tingling feeling with sensitive scalp.  Could it be something completely different and should I be worried?  P.S. I am so glad to see there is a forum for this now.  It's hard to explain the kind of pain you get with Cluster headaches.  My Mother-In-Law is a migraine sufferer and I'm pretty sure she thinks I am just a big baby.  Lol.

Greetings, Shelby, and welcome. First reaction to your question is, what does your neuro think? Second reaction, yes this could be either a trigeminal nerve reaction allied with your usual clusters, or it could be something else, like ice-pick headaches. I would strongly suggest you get your prevents and abortives lined up in case this is prelude to a more involved CH attack. And see your doc. Let us know how it goes. Blessings. lance

Welcome to the board Shelby, I agree with Lance. Anytime the head does a radical change, especially with pain, it's worth a trip to the expert. We worry a lot here that a "CH diagnosis" is used to explain everything in your head, and we end up masking something more sinister. Probably just another CH variant, but worth a quick trip to the doc to confirm.

If you've never used oxygen, this is worth a read. It works as fast as the imitrex injectables for me, much cheaper, no unpleasant after affects, and I don't worry about dumping more chemicals into my already ravaged body! ;)

Glad you found us, let us know what the doc sez.
