Title: POLL: Which side do you feel pain?
Post by LasVegas on Nov 16th, 2011 at 12:13pm
Trying to see if there is a correlation between dominant hand and side of head afflicted.

i.e. I'm left handed and my CH's are always left sided.

If you participate in this poll, please also participate in the poll titled...Are you Left or Right handed?

This might be of use to our CH education...participation encouraged and appreciated  ;)

As per the survey results that have just been posted:

Of the 1134 people took the survey, almost
85% of patients stated the cluster headache pain
was sharp in quality, while 45% stated it was also
pulsating, and 44% stated it could be pressure-like.
The predominant pain side was right-sided in 49%,
while 44% stated it was predominantly left-sided
,
and this was a statistically significant difference
(P = .02). Bilateral cluster headache or experiencing
pain on both sides of the head during an attack
occurred in 3%. Pain would switch sides in 8%
during an individual cluster headache attack, while
31% stated that they had experienced some side
shift in between individual headaches or cycles. Pain
location was in a retro-orbital distribution in 88%,
upper teeth 44%, jaw 37%, ear 28%, and shoulder
region 16%.

And from the cluster survey I've been collecting data on since May 23, 1999 (12,026 responses):

Side of face affected Left side ONLY 4281 35%
Right side ONLY 5295 44%
Both sides 2310 19%

This is precisely one of the reasons I turned the poll function off a long time ago.  People were creating polls asking the same exact questions over and over and over.

If you read the article from Dr. Rozen and Royce Fishman, I promise you that most of these basic questions are answered there.

Sorry DJ, I did read the study just a few minutes after you posted it 2 mornings ago and must've overlooked those statistics, might as well turn off the polls again :-[
