Title: CH and depression
Post by bm7680 on Nov 22nd, 2011 at 11:13pm
Can anyone please tell me if they are linked in any way? I have had people tell me that my CHS are a result of depression but I feel its the other way around.

There is plenty of evidence linking CHs to people getting depressed, however I've not seen anything indicating depression causing CHs.

Depression results in all sorts of correlative symptoms and compensating behaviors: lack of energy or will results in an inability to engage in those things we need for our wellbeing, including work, self-care, social congress, or overindulgence in anthying, etc. But CHs are not caused by depression. Best money now is a defective hypothalmus, although I suspect it is a complex interaction of neurophysical processes. CHs can deepen depression, though, as can any unremitting pain. Depression is similar to CHs in this way: so many misunderstand them and would rather we not have either because it makies them uncomfortable. We would rather not have either, also. Blessings. lance

"Strong" disorders (much disability, pain, chronic, etc.) are associated with depression--not in a causal manner but because these issues can come to dominate our thinking/emotions/behavior.

Simply put, depression, like anger, can arise from our thinking/emotions being dominated by: "I want ....." but I can't get it (my want).

So, helpuful to start paying attention to your automatic/recurring thoughts around your headaches. Then reflect on what you find in light of this....

Was hoping Bob would chime in. His is one of the best responses I've read to the depression CH link, cause and effect cycle.

15 years, 7 chronic.

CH can cause depressive symptoms of course. The social isolation, fear of the next attack, and unknown outlook for them is bound to tax even the most mentally fit. I don't consider myself to suffer from clinical depression, but since these bastards entered my life there's plenty of periods with depressed states. Think of the reverse, the temporary pseudo-euphoria the often follows the end of an attack, especially an 8-10.

No psych here. I don't believe depression is a cause, but a result.
