Title: Verapamil
Post by Samantha on Feb 22nd, 2012 at 12:01am
I am new to this Group, but unfortunately not new to CH.. I have been living with them for just over 21 years.  I was 4 years free... 4 years.. just finished a 9 week bout of traumatic ups and downs.. Going to the neurologist tomorrow.  My question is this.... Has anyone else ever had dramatic drops in blood pressure from verapamil?  I was only on 240mg per day for 8 days before I went off due to such a drop in BP  I was sitting at 83/55 while I was on it.  My usual BP was 115/75.  I took myself off it as I couldn't get into my Dr.  I was scared and weak from such low BP.. Anyone else find the same reaction?  :o
Thanks

Hi, Samantha, and welcome. I'm on 640mg/day of verapamil, and my BP generally comes in around 120/70. I can only imagine what it would be were I not on it. I suspect it is keeping my pressure lower, and I'm not surprised yours is so low given its starting point. You are going to see your doc so that's a good thing. There are other meds available like topomax and lithium. As well as good abortives like triptan injecables. Keep exploring, and insist on finding relief. Blessings. lance

Verapamil caused me to have a very low BP and slowed my heart rate down to 28 BPM and I was on less than 400mg a day. So ... the answer is YES, I too had BP (and heart rate) problems while taking Verapamil.

I'm glad that it helps many, but it can hurt some people for sure.

Thank you for your replies.  I met with my neurologist yesterday..  I am still on topiramates ( I think I forgot to say that I was already on 75mg 2 times/day)  She has upped my dose to 100 mg 2 times/day and has suggested lithium which I have tried in the past without success.
She has also suggested botox for my migraines as I have been diagnosed with both CH and migraines  BOO. :-/
Still hunting for the right answers for me but not ready to rush for a quick fix as I know this is a lifetime diagnosis..  My O2 is still the best abortive that I have as triptans make my chest feel really tight.  Always looking for advice though..  Thanks
