Title: Rotigotine in CCH.
Post by Hoppy on May 28th, 2013 at 9:32pm

Cephalagia  24/may/2013.

A case in cluster headache treated with Rotigotine: clinical and
neurophysiological correlates.

Source, Don Carlo Gnocchi Onlus Foundation, Italy.

Abstract.

Background. Chronic cluster headache (CCH) is characterized
by recurrent bouts of facial pain lasting up to 180 minutes
in the absence of a long remission period.

Case: We report the case of a 43-year old male patient with
treatment-resistant CCH, who improved with administration of
transdermal Rotigotine. We also evaluated the nociceptive
blink reflex habituation that was reduced before the treatment
(as is usual in CH patients) and normalized by transdermal
Rotigotine.

Conclusions. We suggest that Rotigotine could represent a
further therapeutic option in the treatment of drug-resistant CCH.

PS. Rotigotine is more known for the treatment in Parkinson"s
disease.

Interesting. A study of one doesn't lead me to believe this may be some new breakthrough, especially given it is a dopamine agonist, and I can't recall seeing anything like it applied to CH treatment before. It seemed to help the patient's twitchy eye, too.

Interesting, however a study of one person where they "improved" does little other than suggest that further work is very much needed.

Hi Nani,
I think the blinking eye they are referring to, is  the drooping eye we get when suffering a CH attack

I get a twitchy eye when in cycle and the droopy eye during an attack. The twitching drives me nuts, but it only happens between attacks and isn't painful on its own.

Hi Nani,
I've never read anything on twitchy eyes in CH sufferes. I myself
hav'nt experienced them , is it common in CH, or just in CCH.?
I'm thinking because that patient was drug resistent to all other
treatments, is why they tried Rotigotine after doing  research.

Good find, Hoppy, because every avenue must be explored. Even blind alleys have secrets of delight.

Interesting possibility, but I think I'm with Nani on this one.  I get the twitching eye also, and occasionally a twitchy hand and leg, which my Neuro was concerned was Parkinson's.  Fortunately, I do't' fit the other parameters of the disease, but we will be keeping an eye on it as my mother has Parkinson's.

Hi Jerry,
Thanks for your answer to my question on twitchy eyes.
I remember my mum alway's saying, old age does'nt
come by itself, maybe this can also apply to us suffering
from CH. Sorry to hear about your mum, does she use a
Rotigotine patch.?
