Title: Are gut microbes the cause of CH?
Post by nhs on Jun 4th, 2013 at 4:19pm
Your gut’s colonial microbes aid in the development of the immune system, which battles malicious bugs that aren’t normally part of your gut’s microbiota — its microbial repertoire. “Germ-free” mice raised without colonist microbes have a weaker immune system and show exaggerated responses to stress. Studies have also shown that gut microbes influence signaling in the HPA axis (for hypothalamus, pituitary gland and adrenal glands, the key players in the body’s response to stress).

Early in development, gut microbes affect the wiring of nerves in the stress system, influencing how the body reacts to stress for the rest of its life. That suggests that the microbiota’s impact extends to some aspects of mental health, a function only recently appreciated.

“We suggest that gut microbiota are an important player in how the body influences the brain … and influence risk of disease, including anxiety and mood disorders,” write Foster and Neufeld, of McMaster University in Hamilton, Canada.

So the question that begs to be asked: How many of us were diagnosed with baby cholic?

Very interesting stuff.

considering that about 90% of the serotonin we produce is generated in the gut, i wouldnt be too surprised to find out that microbes in the gut played a big part.

When I was orginally diagnosed, my doc thought that it could be prenicious anemia. It's worth getting tested, but I didn't have any of the markers for it.

I never had colic, but I do believe this might be a contributing factor.  One of many, but contributing.

I had a conversation with a doctor about this.  He'd been having good results with the GAPS diet with kids with autism.  The diet's author (a russian neurologist with a kid with autism) firmly believes almost all neurological issues originate in the gut.  The doctor suggested I give it a try.  I also have a food allergy though, so that might have been a factor in him suggesting I try it.  Supposively it can also CURE food allergies and you can go back to eating normally again after 6 months to three years.

It's too fat and onion heavy for me and I ended up spending most of the first 3 days on the toilet before I gave up and switched back to eating normally (moderate fat, low onion).

Anyway, I also think there are many other contributing factors too.
