Title: Food, Fat, Stress as triggers. naproxen helped me
Post by Pat SM on Aug 27th, 2013 at 4:21am
Hi Folks,

I also suffer CH sometimes. I have used my own perception or intuition to determine what triggers these terrible headaches.

I am 46 and after 35 I started getting CH after eating avocado, fatty foods or beef, some types of red wine, cheese. Some coffee creamers, etc.

I read about dioxins from these foods can cause CH.

I recommend reducing fat, alcohol intake and you might feel CH dissappears for a while (until you break th eating rules again).

A young doctor that came home because I could not even walk when in pain diagnosed I had cluster headache (other doctors had failed). Since then I use Naproxen Sodium (220mg) when CH start only (side effects are strokes or heart attack so I keep intake to a minimum).
I also use Reiki to soothe stress (another trigger), to help with digestion and to reduce duration of attack.

I also realized it is worse to stay in bed or inactive. When I go gold prospecting to a river I can eat sausage and red wine and no CH. It might be beacause of exercise...you are burning the crap.

I hope my experience will help so many CH sufferers.

Have a great life!

Pat...from remote Chile.

My dermatologist has CH sometimes too.  He says he takes a vacation to Costa Rica and swims everyday in the warm salt water.  This helps him.

Switch to heavy whipping cream and eat  guanaco,  the other red meat.

Pat, I can't apologize for them but am embarrassed that your first responses are that sterile creation of our species, Male Sarcasm.....

But, you have a tough character and will survive <bg>!

Given your living situation, that you have found a series of responses which give you relief is about all you can do at this point.

Should you get back into "civilization", your options both for diagnosis and treatment would expand greatlly. But until then, take satisfaction in your self-discoveries. When/if you get back to the city, we can outline the more conventional approaches to living with Cluster.

Best wishes....

But avocados he stated was one of his triggers. :-/  And being in the sun will give skin cancer.  :-/

Sounds like the best options might be an air drop to your remote location or trek an adventure to the Vitamin store in Santiago ;)

Hey Gregg,

You broke the guanaco code...

Take vitamin D3 supplements...  and cluster headaches will likely go away...

Thanks and take care,

V/R, Batch

I'm going off my D3 and just reading this post when I get a CH - laughter is the best medicine sometimes :)

Why are you going off the D3 regimen?  Is this a test of your 25(OH)D reserves?

Take care,

V/R, Batch

Twas suppose to be sarcasm Batch :D Sorry!

No,  Vit D3 seems to be working...one week off Verapamil and no full blown hits.  Feel much better, just lingering twinges of jaw and cheek pain.  So kind of a test to see if I'm out of cycle or the D3 is working.  We shall see how it goes :)

Has anyone else noticed the number of first time posters trying to sell things or give off the wall advice without even reading through the site first?  These post just make me laugh...

Naproxen did seem to help me a little in the early 90s. Pain killers became useless for me only when my nocturnal hits started, some 6-7 years later.
