These things have in the past been known as Executive or Holiday headaches given that the sudden release from high high stress would cause a cycle to start.

Equally I've twice had serious cycles busted completely by the sudden onset of extremely high stress, but I'd never reccommend such horror as a cure.

Other good folk here have another take on it completely so it's aways good for a yarn and a giggle.

I get CH when I'm stressed and when I'm not so I don't think it's a factor for me. Mighty stressed during and after though.

Stress is not a trigger.

That's interesting. Stress used to be a trigger for me when I was younger. That's a time when I was chronic with short cycles and no nocturnal attacks. Later on it changed - had long periods of remission, than started having 4-6 week cycles, mainly nocturnal, and in between stress stopped being a major trigger.

A reduction in stress is a trigger for me for both CH and migraines, which can mean that weekends aren't as much fun as they should be.

During my working years I had a stressful job. During the 35 years of stressful work I probably didn't have 3 attacks on the job. My attacks were always during low stress relaxed time. Now that I'm retired and stress (almost) free I'm approaching the second year of chronic CH. My tag line is about the danger of relaxing.

Stress is absolutely a trigger for me. My HA's started during a period of unrelenting stress that lasted a year or so. I have to try to maintain a mellow attitude now. Not always easy, but getting better at it. Can't imagine a better teacher than CH for keeping calm at all times.

There is strikingly little literature on the issue.

The problems with the question are several;

1. "Stress" is a mushy word, referring to a multitude of varying feelings/sensations/conditions. Trying to define it so that research could be concucted would be nearly impossible--and without a uniform definition a controlled study would be nearly impossible.

2. "Stress", as commonly used, is almost a character trait for many people, i.e., so common in their lives that trying to show its presence is strongly linked to Cluster would be impossible. That is, you would have to have stress linked almost always with a Cluster attack and, yet it's an experience which hits in a wide variety of situations/experiences making it impossible to defeine link.

Just run over the list of events/emotions, etc. which we associate with stress. Cluster will only be one of a multitude of experiences.

Stress can effect blood pressure, which can from what I've seen in others and experienced myself effect CH.

Hi All,
Thanks for all your replies. After reading through them.
It would seem that stress can play a part in triggering
CH's.

Cheers, Hoppy.

I'm chronic, so yes if I get seriously stressed out I can get thrown into a headache.

Work related stress caused my first cycle 6 months ago. Although under some sort of control now any stressful situations can cause and increase in symptoms. Relax relax relax ..... Easier said than done

It's funny Dave, there are people on the board who in cycle, only get hit when they relax!! As long as they stay pumped up and stressed, beasty stays at bay! One more example of Beasty varied nature.
