Title: Sleeping Post by maz on Oct 13th, 2013 at 5:40am
Hi all, could some one give me some advice.
I have been an insomniac my whole life. It takes over an hour to get to sleep and then on a really good night I get about 4 hours but split into 2 with a period of being awake in the middle. On an average night I'm lucky to get 3 hours. Tamazapam helps me fall asleep more quickly, but only for an hour. This is the same whether I'm in a CH cycle or not. I'm constantly exhausted. After reading about melatonin on these boards I thought I would try it as a sleeping aid. I've been taking 9mg ( 3x3mg tabs ) every night. One week on and nothing has changed - in fact I've just had my worst night for a long time. Does it take a while to start working ? Am I taking enough ? Can you take too much ? Or am I just wasting my money as I have done so many times over the years with other so called remedies. Any one else have this experience ? Any advice would be most welcome. Thanks Maz. |

I found 15 to the be the minimum effective dose, at least for me. Melatonin is incredibly safe. It's also important to try a few different brands and make sure you're actually getting melatonin. The natural supplement industry isn't well regulated so some brands are essentially just sugar pills.

Thanks idorko,
I will increase the dose, and if there's still no improvement I will try a different brand. |

Hi Maz,
The thing with melatonin they don't work for everyone. But saying that, it can take up to a couple of weeks to kick in. The brand i use is Bioglan, maybe you can get them there in the UK. They work really well for me. Hoppy. |

I use Natrol and had no luck with Nature Made.
You could contact Guipsee, iirc he found a place where you could buy pure melatonin by the kilo and if you got a metric scale you could measure you own doses. |

Do you snore and wake yourself up too? If so a CPAP machine might make a huge difference to the quality of your sleep and that of your partner too.

No, I don't snore - well not enough to be a problem anyway. My husband used a cpap machine for years but can't use it now since he had an operation. In recent years his snoring is not quite so bad though, but when he does obviously it does not help me. But even when I go to the spare room I still don't sleep, so I can't altogether blame him.
My melatonin is 3mg. The brand is "NOW" from iherb in USA. It says on the bottle it is 99% pure. The recommended dose is 1 tablet, but if 3 doesn't work then 1 won't be much good. It may just be taking a while to kick in so I'll persevere for a while. Thanks for your input. Maz. |

Hi Maz,
You need to take 4 or 5 of those to have any success. [smiley=sleep.gif] Hoppy. |

Can't you just see Guissepi with a Kilo of white powder on his kitchen table and a metric scale when one of his former associates drops by??? :o [smiley=yikes.gif]
Maybe we could arrange his second appearance on "Cops" LOL Seriously, Joe would be a good one to talk with about melatonin Jerry |
