Title: Any Body every Tried Meyer Cocktail IV?
Post by wsnurse on Nov 12th, 2013 at 12:52pm
Meyer’s Cocktail IV’s – Provides relief 8-72 hours-works better some treatments than others
However, a standard formula usually contains:
• Magnesium
• Vitamin B-12
• Vitamin B-6
• Panthenol (B5)
• B-Complex
• Vitamin C
Mixed 250 ml saline/lidocaine

Being seeing a natural path to try to break the cluster going on 1 year.  Have been getting these Iv's 1 week stops headache in 10 minutes gone.... last 24 hours. Maynot stop CH but brings it down to a functioning level. Any thoughts??

I'm not quite sure what you mean. Does it or doesn't it stop
your headaches?

Hmmm...  Very interesting...

I'm OK with the magnesium and all the vitamins... just not sure about weekly or more frequent IVs with lidocaine...  I'm not sure keeping the squash anesthetized with lidocaine on a weekly or more frequent basis is all that natural... or healthy...

A more natural and less invasive approach to controlling cluster headache would entail a combination of the anti-inflammatory regimen with 10,000 IU/day vitamin D3 (didn't see any of that in the Meyer’s Cocktail)... and the short (abbreviated) version of the Linus Pauling Protocol...

What is the Linus Pauling Protocol?

L-ascorbate (Vitamin C) 5-6 grams a day in divided doses

L-Lysine 5 grams a day in divided doses

L-Proline 2-3 grams a day in divided doses

The abbreviated protocol...  (1000 mg of vitamin C, 1000 mg of L-Lysine and 1000 mg L-Proline twice a day)... all taken by mouth.

The IV will stop the headache within 5 minutes of the attack. I only get the IV if th CH is an 8 or higher and the O2 is not helping.yes,  it stops the headache, sometimes for 4 hours and sometimes for 8 but it is only a short solution.

I am unable having trouble absorbing magnesium through the GI system which is also a problem because magnesium does seem to give me relief.

So, if I'm understanding you correctly, whenever you are at a KIP 8 or higher you drive to the ER/hospital and they give you this IV ???

When given in high enough amounts magnesium is also a NMDA receptor antagonist, much like the Ketamine that some (like me) have found extremely helpful for clusters.

No 1st of all can't function by 8. No thinking, clearly no driving. Very Audio sensitive. But how it works is I call my Naturopath who mixes up the IV and he or is nurse meet me at the office and run the IV cocktail in over 1 hour. I Had one yesterday broke the pain of a 10 headache in 10 minutes 10 to 0 but only lasted 4 hours and wam back to same CH stuff....

very discouraged.

WS,

Have your Naturopath write you a scrip for the 25-Hydroxyvitamin D lab test.  It's also called 25(OH)D.

This is the serum level metabolite of vitamin D3 that's used to measure its status.  83% of CH'ers who had this lab test prior to starting the anti-inflammatory regimen with 10,000 IU/day vitamin D3 reported 25(OH)D concentrations less than 30 ng/mL.

Their average serum concentration of 25(OH)D was 23.4 ng/mL before starting this regimen and 76.0 ng/mL after experiencing a favorable response to this regimen.

Given the frequency, severity and duration of your cluster headaches, the odds are you are vitamin D3 deficient. The normal reference range for 25(OH)D is 30 to 100 ng/mL.

If your lab results come back indicating your 25(OH)D is less than 30 ng/mL or significantly less than 60 ng/mL, the odds are also in your favor (80%) that you'll experience a favorable response after starting the anti-inflammatory regimen.

You can find all the info you need on the over-the-counter supplements in this regimen along with suggested dosing at the following link:

The goal of this therapy involves elevating your 25(OH)D serum concentration into the "green zone" (60 to 110 ng/mL.) with at least 10,000 IU/day vitamin D3.  This is the range of 25(OH)D response where 80% of the CH'ers who start this regimen experience a significant reduction in the frequency, severity and duration of their CH...  60% of the CH'ers who start this regimen experience a lasting pain free response.

This data comes from an online survey of 110 CH'ers who have used this regimen for at least a month...  some for more than a year...

As a medical professional...  I think you'll see the implications...  The results of this survey suggest a causal relationship between a vitamin D3 deficiency and cluster headache.  80% of the CH'ers who start this regimen experience a favorable response.

The real clincher...  Chronic and a few episodic CH'ers who have gone pain free on the anti-inflammatory regimen and then stopped taking it completely reported their cluster headaches returned in as little as a week.  Restarting this regimen resulted in a return to a pain free state...

You can draw your own conclusions...

If your Naturopath has questions when you ask for the 25(OH)D lab test and discuss this regimen... take along the following link at VitaminDWiki:

Regarding GI problems when taking magnesium... it could be the type of magnesium salt you're taking...  CH'ers taking magnesium malate, magnesium glycinate or magnesium citrate, in order, have far fewer GI problems.  Magnesium oxide has the lowest bioavailability and also the highest probability of causing osmotic diarrhea.

Take care and please keep us posted.
