Title: Doctor says I have cluster headaches Post by sweed on Dec 30th, 2013 at 8:31am
So I went doctor this friday and she said it seems like a cluster headache. She gave me imagran or something like that which doesnt really work. Told me to come back if they get worse or cycle still lasts.
I am still unsure or i could just be getting lucky i will explain why. I get pains on the left suide of my head and around the eye. Everyday and pain peaks at night time around 3am. For starters my eye does not tear up and my nose on the side where is hurts is not always blocked and if it is then both sides are blocked. The pain is actually bareable which is making me think this might be a migraine... I mean when the peak pain comes at night I can actually carry on playing computer games or surfing the net. I notice the peak pains are random and not fixed e.g throughout the day I feel very very mild tingling 1/10 pain then around 12am I feel 3/10 pain and then 1am I feel 6/10 pain and around 2am its back down to 2/10... In fact the pain does wake me up but then i fall back asleep after 15 to 20 mins while the pain is still there. Also the head pains seem to get worse when i smoke without window open or if i sleep less. Also i get 4-6/10 pains in my head in the morning when i wake up for an hour. Yesterday I also had something very weird usually i get pains on my left side but last night i had pain on my left side around 6/10 and my right eye had 2/10 behind the eye at the same time. Now I am worried what if it is something like a tumour. Then again has anyone here had cluster headaches like mine weird randomly and very mild? (COmpared to what other have) I had this headache for 2 weeks now also I remember having something similar to this 3 years ago where I would wake up with a migraine for two weeks straight until it left. |

Good morning, Sweed, and welcome! You raise several good questions concerning the diagnosis you received. It is entirely possible for CHs to start out in a mild and random fashion, and then over time morph into the true beast we know them to be. Having said that, yours is not the typical experience so it would be worth your time to visit a headache specialist. There are many cluster like conditions which can mimic CHs. They are treated differently, too. So that would be my advice: find and make an appointment with a dedicated headache specialist in your area. That specialist will likely run all sorts of tests to rule out various conditions and only then will a diagnosis of CHs be given. Good luck, God bless and keep us informed. lance

Oh and I just want to add the pain arrives slowly very slowly it doesn't come suddenly as others claim... once i feel pain increasing slowly i pop pain killers that actually help a tiny bit like the pain goes up slowly take about 30 mins to one hour for the pain to increase to peak... and goes down slowly the times when i get peak pains vary at what time they strike sometimes i get pain around 2am other days its 3:30am.
The pain is pulsating feels like i have a constant pain then suddenly little small lines/area of extreme pain every two seconds (like as if my veins are pulsing) If i touch the area of my head (right above my ear) and i push it, it hurts a little feels sore, hurts a lot more during peak pain infact if i massage this area pain feels like it goes down a little if i push it pain intensifies. |

Thanks Wimsey I will see if they go away by next week... if not i may do so... I hope they go away because they seem so similar to the headaches i had three years ago. Which went away after i took some nasal spray that had steroids in it but looked like a becotide asthma pump.

Hi Sweed and welcome
What we can't do here is to give a diagnosis, that is something you need to get from an experienced headache specialist as this is a pretty complex area of medicine with multiple possible causes of the headache symptoms you describe. There are elements of what you describe that could be CH and some that are not typical CH. However it is common for CH to start in a milder form and progress to the classical CH over a period which could be from weeks to years. I hope you get your answers soon. |
