I put rounds for the .22lr, 5.56 for my AR-15 and a 7.62x39 for my AK-47 in the shot, just for the size comparison.
Aside from the cost, each shot is carefully dialed in because they are still supersonic at 1500 yards and will travel 3-4 times that distance. With my advancing age, I'm happy to land them where I want at 500 yards, let alone the younger guys ringing steel out to toward 1,000. Heck, their scopes cost more than my pickup is worth...... ;D |

Wow! 50 BMG at Walmart!
The largest caliber you can find at Walmart up here is 30-06 or maybe some 300 WinMag. Gotta love Texas! Bigguns.gif |

All I can say is.... wow.
Although I'm jealous, I've only fired a 50 twice. Hell on my shoulder, but I'd fire 10000 more Here in Canada, its safe to say not many people have access to ammo, let alone a rifle of that size. I just "know the right people" I guess, my dad's best friend runs a tactical supply company and custom builds 50's. |

Always liked to hear the twin 50's from the gun tub on the bow of the PBR. They will rip everyting up!

What are you using to touch that .50 off? lance

Lance,
I don't own a 50, and I've only had the pleasure of shooting bolt guns so far: 31" Armalite AR-50's and an older 29" Barrett M99. The Armalite's are very popular around here because of the lower price. I know of six in my small town of 7,800 people and I'm sure there are many more in the area. That's why Walmart stocks it - it sells fast at close to $4.00 per round. I have a customer who keeps making attractive offers to trade some of my stuff for his AR-50, but I just can't justify owning such a limited use rifle. Cool? Oh heck yes! Practical? Ummmmm....No! I have a 30-378 that packs a punch. Ammo is a leetle pricey though.

As long as we're on this subject, I think I'll share something that not many people in this day and time have seen....a Japanese WW2 Arisaka type 99 rifle. My Dad brought it back from the Pacific theater after the war. It sat in the attic stairs until last year when I retrieved it and set about cleaning and repairing the old relic.

I had to order some screws for it....that was about 30 bucks for the original parts and a new strap. The old one is just about powder. I didn't toss it though. This little project was more about history than firearms...that and Dad enjoyed seeing it all cleaned up and repaired. As a side note, it's a damn shame that the 70 some year old stock looks better that the base boards in my office.... :-[ |

Sweeeeet old gun! Have you been able to determine what year it was made?
"Bring backs" are so much nicer than the imports......and you're right - many people have never heard of them. I have never seen that type of sight before, effective or not, it's cool to look at! Thanks for the look! Marc |

Roughly 1941.....it's hard to see all the markings but it's definately the early (read that as better made) version. The later versions were very cheaply made and are in fact dangerous to fire. I did track down the production plants for the rifle and the bayonet....but damn if I can find the paper I wrote the info down on. ::) |

Title: I picked up a Blonde - and a Brunette Post by Marc on Mar 12th, 2014 at 5:06pm
Not what you were thinking? They are both Russian designed Mosin Nagant's.
The blonde is a Polish 1952 M44 and the brunette is a Romanian M44. The ammo can that came with the Polish model was unusual. Still soldered shut, brass cased can of 360 rounds. I've fired 135 rounds of it without a single failure of any kind. The ammo is really old being made in 1955........... but it's still younger than Bob P! Fascinating thread. My youngest son recently bought a sniper version of the Mosin Nagant that is a very sweet shooting weapon, although not quite as accurate beyond 400 yards as an M1 a friend of mine owns. I would love a chance to shoot that old Arisaka. My middle son's father-in-law has one his father brought home, and Rob has shot it a few times. He says it is a nice weapon, but a little lacking in punch. Much like what our men are using now as far as stopping power.
Nice thing about using the .50 for deer hunting is if you hit it right you don't have to bother field dressing it. ;) |
Title: Re: 50 BMG ammo at Walmart Post by Racer1_NC on Mar 12th, 2014 at 11:10pm
Jerry.... I'd be more than happy to bring it out to a meeting sometime if we can find a place to shoot it.
Marc.....How long has it been since you bought those? I'm assuming they were NIB? |
Title: Re: 50 BMG ammo at Walmart Post by wimsey1 on Mar 13th, 2014 at 7:54am
The first rifle I ever handled, and played with, was an Arisaka brought back by my uncle. It, too, sat behind the steps leading into the basement. It had the chrysanthemum also, and at 10 years old, I puzzled over the sights until I later learned they were as you say: for airplanes. Saw one a couple years back in a lgs and have been kicking myself ever since that I didn't pick it up. Lots of Nagants around here but I haven't had the urge to pick one up. blessings. lance

Bought them both here in Texas about 3 years ago - no I wasn't buying new guns in 1952 and 1955 ;D The blond was reported to be unfired. No import marks at all, packed in factory grease - not cosmoline. I've put enough rounds through it to be able to accurately punch large holes in hard objects, far away. I really like those shorter Mosin M44 carbines vs. the full length M91/30's. But the whole point of these is the surplus ammo at 18 to 20 cents per round, with ballistics in the category of .308 and .30-06. Until I picked up another AR-15, the brunette was my truck gun.
