Title: Question for all male ClusterHeads
Post by SmallNStout on May 2nd, 2014 at 10:16pm
Do any of you guys, no matter what your age, have hot flashes? Suddenly, for no reason, you just start heating up and sweating a bit, then it disappears after 10-15 minutes?

I'm not ashamed to say that I have them, and (in addition to night sweats) research has shown me that guys who are my age (34) can have them due to a hypothalamus dysfunction, since that little batch of brain cells controls internal body temperature and temperature response.

I'm beginning to see a pattern: slow/nonexistant muscle growth, hot flashes, night sweats, fatigue, sleep problems, depression - all symptoms of male menopause. But how can that be when I am only 34? Well... all of those hormones that control all of that stuff come from the hypothalamus... The same thing that is theorized causes cluster headaches... So if I have something wrong with that bad boy, it could be causing ALL of my problems.

Now if only there was a way to test, image, etc so the docs could see if my hypothalamus was working properly.... So do any of you guys have night sweats and/or hot flashes?

Perhaps you've answered your own question and it's time to consider other possibilities.

CH has been known to cause all of those problems, and then some.

There are pictures/scans done by Dr. Goadsby which show that our little cluster head hypo thingy is all f'ed up.

While I don't get got flashes, I do have a great deal of trouble regulating my body temp....by that I mean I have a very small comfort level before I'm over heating or freezing......I've always assumed it's partly my screwed up hypo thalamus. My doc couldn't find any medical reason to explain it.

I too have a slightly messed up temperature control. For the cold I'm pretty immune, often just wearing normal office clothes when others are in winter jackets. And similar for the hot, I can cope just fine with high temperatures. But then the odd thing is that I can suddenly feel pretty warm when the temperature is either normal or a bit warmer than normal.

Doctors have not found a reason for this, although one thing they did suspect is a thyroid issue which can cause simmilar symptoms, but the tests came back negative.

I'd ask your doctors if this could be a cause for your symptoms.

I'm with Joe, except I carry enough insulation on me to handle the cold pretty well.  it is the more temperate ranges that I have trouble with.  I'm either putting on or taking off clothes.

Thanks guys, this makes me think that I am not alone - all the weird crap that has been happening to me over the past few years is starting to make a little more sense. Hormones are the little workers for everything in your body, and the hypothalamus is the master control for them... If it's screwed up, so are you.

*sigh* back to testing..... at least this time I have a target I am trying to hit, not just Neuro's, ENTs, Psychiatrists, etc trying to find the bone needle in a haystack....

Have you had your testosterone levels checked?  One major cause of Male hot flashes can be low testosterone levels and low T levels have definitely been implicated in some peoples clusters.

Just spoke with my doc last week about test levels and well, she was very open to checking this out. We went back to my blood work history and found out that at age 29, my test levels were at 340! (range for men is 300-900). Each year T levels drop by approximately 1%, so I can only imagine where I am now.

Anyway I had new bloodwork done (still waiting for the results) but she gave me a script for T anyway. I took my first injection on Sunday, and quite honestly it seems to be working. My shadows have lessened in frequency and intensity already. It takes some amount of time for the T to work into the system, so we'll see how I am in another couple of weeks.

I am hopeful that this may be the answer for me.

D,

Have you started the anti-inflammatory regimen with at least 10,000 IU/day vitamin D3?  Did you ask your doc for the lab test for 25(OH)D when you went in for your last round of lab tests?

Take care and please keep us posted.

Sure, I get them occasionally. Opioids will also cause them. If you are taking painkillers for CH, I'd suggest you aggressively look for other treatments (almost any other). Pain killers don't work very well if at all on the attack, they can also cause muscle degradation, addiction, and many other bad things. I still keep some around (under proper Dr prescription and direction), but they are for rare use and it takes enough to kill most people.

Hi folks,

I was prescribed some predinsone for this latest cluster. A few hours after taking it, I get the sweats bigtime.

I also have had a pituitary tumor that was removed (most of it anyways) in '08, low T, low thyroid.

I have had trouble regulating my body heat for many years, but the pred is going to make me spontaneously combust!    :D

Ditto on the Pred.
On my last cycle had night time sweats every night for 2 weeks during the Pred taper. So bad I had to get up and dry myself off and go and sleep on the couch (not pleasant to sleep next to!)
My wife thought she had the rights on hot sweats but I'm sure gave her a run for her money during that time.
Still get infrequent temp rises out of nowhere while out of cycle but that could just be an age thing.

I think the profuse sweating is a side effect of the Pred.
I had terrible night sweats the last time I had a Pred. taper

About a month ago, during what looked like the onset of a new cycle (I think I stopped it) I did experience hot flashes. I'm 43 and a CH sufferer since I was 11 and that's a first.

I think the reason is significant changes in testosterone which is know to happen during cycles. Another simple way to look at it: CH involves a malfunction in the hypothalamus which is, among other things, our body temperature regulator.
