Title: Pain behind the ear Post by cartographer on Jun 11th, 2014 at 5:11am
Hi,
I've been having an episode for a few weeks now. About 12 months since the last one... This time around I have noticed something new. Besides my usual pain in and around my left eye, I have a small spot just behind the top of my ear, about 2 or 3 centimeters towards the back of the head... This spot is aching as hell during a hit, radiating out to the neck, and is also extremely tender/painful during the rest of the days, both when pressing it and also just making the shadows worse. Does anyone else have this? :-/ |

Several of us have noted "tender" spots on the side or back of our heads. I know if I put any pressure on the right side occipital region (like resting my head on a pillow, or just wearing a hat) it can kick off an episode. So while I haven't experienced what you're describing it doesn't surprise me. lance

When an attack is just beginning, I can usually find a small, sore spot behind my ear on the affected side. The occipital nerve is involved. I have found over decades of dealing with this, that gently applying a frozen gel pack from the freezer (or even just some ice) for 15-20 minutes right on the area can be a first line of defense if you catch it early. Even if you don't catch it early, it can bring some temporary relief.

I never thought to ask about this, I just always figured it was stress pain. I do tend to stress out and try to fight back the pain with willpower and rigid shaking muscle in my neck, arm, leg, etc., I'll need to try and pay closer attention and see if I am experiencing the same tender spots like you all are describing. They don't sound like stress specific, but maybe nerve related.

I have that pain behind my ear, in my neck and back of my head. I too use a frozen gel pack to put pressure and cold on those areas for a little relief, not to mention to cool my face, head and neck down as it feels like a lava making machine!

I get pain right inside my ear, like on the ear drum itself. Also behind the ear, low down behind the lobe I get a strange fluttery feeling sometimes. As if there is a worm wriggling in there. It only lasts for a second at a time and happens probably twice in a forty minute attack. It feels really weird.
