Title: I'm History/Historical... Post by BarbaraD on May 6th, 2015 at 12:14pm
Yep, and show some respect. :)
The Historical society of Gladewater called me and set up an interview to pick my brain on historical events of the 40s in Gladewater (from first hand knowledge). My parents built a MOTEL (when Tourist Courts were the thing).. the ONLY one between Dallas and Shreveport at the time (1948) with A/C. In later years (the early 50s) ELVIS stayed with us (as did several other VIPs). A friend of mine found an insert (4 pages) from the newspaper of 1948 (at an estate sale) of the grand opening of the Res-Mor Motel and I told the Museum that they could have it (my kids would just burn it when I'm gone). It gives details of everything in the rooms and how it came about - it's really amazing the details in that four pages. And I REMEMBER that night .. I was all dressed up in my sailor dress with my white socks and patent leather shoes and acting like I was grown up greeting all the people who came to congratulate mom and dad. It was the social event of the season. (Ok, Gladewater didn't have much excitement back in the 40s.. and things like that were a BIG deal.. ::)). Anyhow, Gladewater has a museum that goes back to the Oil Boom of the 30s with all kinds of things in it that people have donated. They even have an Elvis room and one of the "guest registration cards" from our motel is a featured memento in that room. Don't know what they're going to do with the info I give them, but they've been bugging me for months and we finally came up with a date for the interview. It's Friday ... So anyhow this is a nice thing for me .. getting old has advantages.. can't remember what I had for breakfast, but can remember what happened in the 40s... :P :-* |

Nice Barb.
I and my antique pals like spending time in local history too. It's harder for me to make mistakes back there. |

It was a really interesting interview. They asked questions about things I'd forgotten about..
My office building (when I was in Gladewater) was even historical.. Back in the 30s and 40s it was the Green Hut - a coffee shop in the day time and a beer joint at night (curb service and everything). When I was about a year old, two of my uncles took me in there one night (in my diaper - they never dressed me to take me out on the town) and thought it was cute to sit me on top of the table and feed me beer. The owner didn't think it was near as funny and kicked all three of us out -- first beer joint I ever got kicked out of.. :) And as I was growing up, my mom sent me to the "coffee" shop with Dad in the mornings to "open" the town and in the afternoons to "close" the town so I learned to argue football and politics and drink coffee there also. When we bought it for our office, the first thing we moved in was the coffee pot and I got this strange urge to argue football and politics (did a lot of that over the years too...) and after we got the fridge moved in we kept a little beer in it for the "late nights". Those ladies are looking for a picture of it from back in the day.. But it made me think of how good us kids from that era had it compared to what's going on in the world today. Anyhow, I've got some more stuff they need that I offered (as soon as I find it) - my kids don't give a rip about it so they might as well have it. So I'm history now.. :) At least my family is.. :-* |

I bet not may people can claim to having been thrown out of a beer joint at 1 year old. :D
I love history too Barbara, and like you ,I especially love my own, and have traced my family tree way back - one brach going back to 1628. My husband says I look at the past with rose tinted glasses because times were incredibly hard in the past, and I completely agree, particularly the further back you go. It was a crime to be poor in Victorian England. I guess we have it so much easier now. BUT, they were gentler times. Wars aside, people were more peaceful, more respectful of each other (and themselves) and happier with thier lot. The world today is just one big rat race and would benefit greatly from some old fashioned values. |

Yeah, someone said "progress is great - it just went on too long!" :)
I remember the year when we got the FRIST rotary phones - stayed up till midnight when they started working, to call someone.. It was a marvel of our time.. Our number was 2256. That WAS a long time ago.. (about 1952). But even when my son was little I could turn him out and let him run the neighborhood (as could the neighbors with their kids) and not worry about them getting kidnapped. Someone was watching them. And if a kid acted up - we corrected them - no matter who's kid it was (and told their parents about it). But alas... we just live in different times now.. and the past is just good memories.. But it's nice to go back ever once in a while.. and remember.. :-* |
