Guessing one is the male and one the female? With the male being the brightly coloured one at the top.

My guess is grebe with the male on top, maybe in nuptial plumage.

They'd go well with a heavier dinner ale.

Fantastic photos Svenn...  I suspect the Mandarin duck in gray plumage is a hen...  There is a species of gray male Mandarine ducks but they have a big top knot of head feathers... the hens don't.

There is another explanation called eclipse plumage...  START PRINTPAGEMultimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or RegisterEND PRINTPAGE

The male molts the bright breeding plumage and starts looking like a hen...  There are still some tell tail male plumage characteristics like the blue around the hackles and wing highlights.

However after closer examination, Svenn is correct... The male Mandarin duck in eclipse plumage retains his orange bill...  The female Mandarin ducks have a gray or dark colored bill in all the photos I pulled up.

My first thought was it's a cross dresser...    ::)

Maybe it's the famous Jenner duck.   ;)

The first one looks so good that at first I wondered if it was a decoy.

Beautiful
