Looking like it could be an all southern hemisphere set of semi-finals, with an Oz / NZ final.

Then how do you think we feel, Maz? It's looking more and more like an Oz-NZ final but all of our nation's money goes on supporting ex-pat Kiwis, variously on welfare or in jail, which means the New Zealand economy is booming and they can pay the referee far more than we can afford. Come the revolution, things will change!!! |

The ONLY thing I know about Rugby....well...besides that it's 1000% better than "football" (soccer to us Yanks)...comes from my work mate (the only non clusterhead I ever met who knew exactly what CH was because he used to drive his friend with such to the ER and help dig his fingers out of the dash):
"Rugby is a hooligan sport played by gentlemen vs football... which is a gentleman's sport played by hooligans" From London area...he played "ruggers"... is 6'3" and near 18 stone...walks like a 90 year old as a result. Was particularly proud that his ears were not cauliflowered...musta worn those silly ear-cups........ And oh....this'll piss someone off...but I've always rooted for the "All-Blacks".... because I love the name....................... |
Title: Re: Rugby World Cup. Post by Mike NZ on Oct 30th, 2015 at 12:32am jon019 wrote on Oct 29th, 2015 at 7:37pm:
The name was originally from some newspaper report where the team was described as being a team full of all backs (about half the team are forwards who attack and the backs are the defenders (very rough description)), but this got corrupted to all blacks, which stuck, especially as their normal strip is all black. |
Title: Re: Rugby World Cup. Post by jon019 on Oct 30th, 2015 at 12:58am
Most interesting and most appreciated Mike! Ima sports fan...this stuff is like the cheese on crackers..it makes a friggin meal!!!!
And...as I canna help myself....as I told Peter...my work bloke referred previously...my FAVORITE Brit footie team has always been "Arsenal"...I LOVED the name...and the green stripes reminded me of my beloved NY Yankees. Much as I protest...played sublimely... it is the 'beautiful game" (Seattle has a superb team). Reminds me of European version of hockey...poetry on ice...no goons allowed. The LA Lakers used to play a version....................... |

The cricket team are the Black Caps, the hockey team are the Black Sticks and the badminton team wanted to be called the Black Cocks (after the shuttlecock game is played with), but that wasn't approved. You can imagine that name would have caused reactions wherever they played. And to really confuse things, the soccer team probably considered a few options, like the Black Balls, but changed things around to be the All Whites (they play in an all white strip). |

A letter to the Editor in today's The Weekend Australian under the heading History with All Blacks -
It was but 100 years ago this month that a scratch rugby match was played on the beaches of Lemnos between the rifle brigades of New Zealand and Australia. It didn't have the glamour of the Rugby World Cup, but it did help to lift morale during a lull in the fighting on the Gallipoli peninsula. Lemnos was the staging post for the campaign to take the Dardenelles, an island where the poet Rupert Brookes lies buried, the son of a master at Rugby School where William Webb Ellis in- vented the game. With tide out, the wind blow- ing across the sands and a poorly erected set of goalposts, the New Zea- landers played in khaki and the Aus- tralians wore blue. It wasn't long before the Kiwis gained the ascend- ancy scoring from a forward rush. Late in the second half, Australia crossed the line to score its only try but the damage in this lop-sided match had been done and New Zealand ran out winners by 33-3. This weekend, we will be privi- leged to see the dash and determi- nation of the Wallaby backs, but undoubtedly the forward strength of the All Blacks rallying in defence, much like their forebears, may be the defining factor in who gets to lift the trophy. Whatever the result, those former Wallabies and All Blacks who paid the supreme sacrifice, two Wal- labies dying on Anzac Day, 1915, will no doubt look down on the game played in heaven. [smiley=referee.gif] New Zealand have resisted a stirring second-half fightback from Australia to win the Rugby World Cup final 34-17 at Twickenham.
The All Blacks opened up 21-3 lead shortly after the break before the Wallabies briefly closed to within four points with converted tries to David Pocock and Tevita Kuridrani. But the All Blacks held their nerve, with a late runaway try to Beauden Barrett blowing out the scoreline as New Zealand became the first team to win the Webb Ellis Cup three times. Cheers Hoppy |

Well, it's that time of the year again! The Melbourne Cup! The race that stops a nation. My thoughts this year are,
Fame Game. Trip To Paris. Who Shot Thebarman. Preferment. Roughies: Bondi Beach, Big Orange, Max Dynamite. I shall be linking all these in a Quinella & Trifecta. My hard earned will be on Trip To Paris to win the Cup. Cheers, [smiley=me&mb.gif] |

Except for Fame Game I couldn't agree more, and if it wasn't for the fact that I've never picked a Melbourne Cup winner ever, not once in my life, I'd even be tempted to have a little wager. As always it's on the first Tuesday in November and for the third year in a row we won't be bothered by the race that stops another nation, the US election, which is also commonly held on the first Tuesday in November. Fair dinkum, they have no respect for priorities! My favourite part of the day is always the "Fillies on the Field" fashion parade because the ladies really do look so lovely, though I'll never understand how they walk so beautifully on the grass in those high heels. As for the blokes, they should be hosed down with the horses. Let the games begin!!! |

Brian, I mentioned Max Dynamite as one of my roughies, but could of been a different outcome if this didn't happen.
Ed Dunlop-trained Trip To Paris, who finished fourth in the Cup, has a less serious problem with his left hind leg bandaged after he was galloped on and lost a shoe during the race. Hoppy |
