Title: Weight Loss
Post by Michael63 on Apr 13th, 2016 at 1:19pm
I'm a 63 year old male, 6'1" 210 lbs., normally. With this cycle I have noticed a weight loss, not that I can't afford it, but, I have never experienced a weight loss as I am now. Since the beginning of this cycle, mid December, to date, I have lost about 16 lbs. Has anyone experienced a weight loss like this?

Most notably, the loss has occurred since I began the D3 regimen 7 weeks ago.

Michael, It's always best to check in with your doctor, when you have weight loss for no particular reason.

Yup....early in my CH career...when episodic...6-8 weeks on/off...I would typically lose 5-10 per active cycle...and I only weighed 184 lbs at the time. Attributed it to diminished (of an already low) appetite....consistent hits at dinner time (my only meal)...and...of course...NO BEER!

I also agree with Hoppy...16 lbs sounds like a lot...let your Doc know........

Best

Jon

Thanks all,

Jon, that is my problem too. I am usually pretty active at the dinner table, but since the start of this cycle, the appetite has diminished considerably.

I will check in with my doctor next week for my appointment.

Apart from the deminished appetite, the stress could be a big factor too.  I know when I had a prolonged period of high stress a few years ago (not CH related) I lost 21 pounds, and I was only about 125 pounds to start with. When the stress time ended, I put the weight back on.
My guess is it's a combination of the two, but as suggested - any unexpected weight loss should be discussed with a doctor.

What meds are you taking. some of the meds for CH will cause weight loss. And then again, some will cause weight gain.. I've taken BOTH and gone both ways..  ::)

Unless it gets to be a problem, I wouldn't worry too much about it..  :-*

Barbara,

I don't take any meds. The only things I take are the D3 regimen and oxygen when needed. I have been pain free for about a week now and appetite is returning, but the weight loss continues.

I found Topamax to be great for weight loss as it left me in such a mental fog that I forgot things like eating. I've also found that other CH and migraine preventives have been good for weight gain.

M-63.. never had a problem with the D3 regimen.. Zonagran (my neuro changed me off Topamax to Zonagran) will cause weight loss.

But I EAT and don't gain weight and I'm on D3 so can't say for sure ... If it gets to be a problem .. go check with your doc about it. Otherwise I really wouldn't worry about it.

I always said my husband was "fattening" and after he died I lost almost 100 pounds so maybe it was HIM all along  :).. Good a theory as any. But as long as you're healthy I wouldn't worry about it.

Just make sure you eat "right" and take your vitamins.   :-*

Barbara, I have a food Nazi who makes sure I eat well.  She is a very strong believer in eating right, getting everything I need.

I did find over the weekend that after being PF for 9 days, I had a relapse Saturday night.  Pain was very light, but it still made me think the attacks were back.  She mentioned to me that the last time we ate Chinese, that the same thing happened.  This makes me wonder if some component of Chinese food could be a trigger for me.  Maybe the soy sauce.  Don't know, but am wondering if anyone else has ever reported soy sauce as a trigger.

Last night, Sunday, was PF.

D3 Believer,

Michael

Michael,

Was the Chinese meal prepared at home or bought in? I have heard people avoiding Monosodium Glutamate.

Peter.

Yup...MSG and aspartame (most diet drinks) are triggers for some...including me. Read all food labels and be aware that MSG "hides" under various names like hydrolyzed yeast...google it to see the various other names....

Most Asian restaurants these days studiously avoid MSG since it has such a negative connotation...but they may be using foods/ingredients HIGH in glutamic acid....a naturally occurring amino acid that MAY cause problems. Mushrooms, tomatoes, most proteins, soy sauce, etc (google for a list) contain higher amounts...some of these foods were problems for me .Note that in most cases the glutamic acid is bound like other amino acids and should not be a problem...but we're all different. in how we respond....

The only way to tell...for yourself...is an elimination diet where you stop a particular food or food group for a while...note your response (or lack thereof) and slowly re-introduce...

Best

Jon

Peter and Jon,

It was purchased at a "prepared fresh" Chinese restaurant. We dined in. I guess that I never noticed the problem before but luckily my girlfriend has a better memory than I do.

I will take the advice and do the eliminations and take notes.

Thank You for your insight.

Great words.

Here's to PF days.

I had a hit ONE TIME after eating Chinese, but never again and I eat it a LOT. Now Kip (of the Kip scale) couldn't get near MSG without getting hit EVER.. we just all have different triggers.. just have to find out which are yours (trial and error).

Wishing you lots of PF days and nights. :-*
