Cindy and I admitted our son in the hospital yesterday and there is a 99% chance that he has cancer. There is a 5" diameter tumor on his left lung. The tumor caused pneumonia which they are treating with antibiotics which has helped the pneumonia to subside.

It's going to be a long wait for the biobsy results to see what type it is. The cancer doctor said the type Lance Armstrong had is the easiest to cure so we are hoping at worse case that that's the type we will be dealing with.

We are just totally devestated and can't believe it's true as he is only 24 years old. We have family support here with us at this time. Even though the doc says it would take a small miracle to not be cancer, we are not giving up and asking for vibes/prayers if you don't mind sending them his way.

We found out today that the cancer is lymphoma. My son Dave is totally devestated and wants some time alone. We will be heading back to the hospital in a little while. Cindy and I want to thank all deeply for your love and support. Some of your know Raye, my sister, she is her with me, as always, and says thank you too.

We'll be praying, and I'll pass it along to my church.

The best time to seek a support group is right now.  I know you have us and you know we'll be here for you all, but you also need people who have or are going through what you are now.  Your doctors office staff most probably has all kinds of information for you to help you find a group that's right for you.

Praying for a miracle....there's still that 1% out of the 99 that your doc mentioned, also.

What a blow! I am so sorry you and your family are dealing with this.
I do, however, want to remind you of something. cancer has come a long way. Many forms are cureable...and each day, scientists come up with more options. canceris no longer a death sentence. My mother survived breast cancer 23 years! Cancer never did take her life. Get good doctors, keep a positive attitude and lean on your friends in Clusterville when things get tough.

I second what Cathi says!  I've actually known several people to beat lymphoma - not saying it's an easy battle because it certainly is not - but with the right doctors and everybody on his side, I'll be praying like mad that he beats this thing.

Cancer is so prevalent now that it's slowly becoming common place to have it and beat it into submission.  Dave is going to be OK!  He has a fight ahead of him so it's good that he has good genes. ;)

Very sorry to hear this, Bob.  Y'all have a huge emotional support team behind you, so lean on us when you need to.  You know you got all the prayers, vibes, mojo, voodoo and whatever else we got.

You also know attitude is everything.  People with good attitudes and positive outlooks seem to beat cancer even when doctors say it's not possible.  Give him time to get his head around it and then kick him in the ass if necessary to jump start that "I'm going to beat this" attitude.

You're right Mike. Now they've determined that they are not sure what type it is again. They are saying it could still be lymphoma, but it's a better chance that it may be thymoma. Luckily they've held off on the chemo for now. Instead he may have to go to Chicago hospital for surgery today to remove the thimus gland in his neck and then use radiation on the tumor nex to the liver. Very confusing at this point so we are still continuing to pray that this all works out. Thanks again for all your positive vibes and prayers.

Small update. Surgery went ok. It will take a few days for the results so we're hoping to have a treatment plan by Friday. Right now they're leaning toward chemo & radiation to shrink the tumor, than surgery after that.

Quick update: David is doing pretty good for now. He has had a second operation to get a larger sample and scope. They have no idea which type of cancer it is as it is very rare. Samples have been sent to hospitals throughout the US pathology departments to decide which method of treatment will be best. It looks like it will be a trail since no-one has ever had his type of cancer. He may be in the record books. Good news is they said he was the 1st one ever to NOT go to ICU after his surgery. He is on steroids right now and will do a bone marrow check tommorro followed by chemo on Wed.  It has not spread anywhere.  They cannot operate until after they shrink it as its' too close to vital organs.  We are holding up pretty good at this point and feel he is going to kick this and get it out of his body. Thanks for the well wishes.

OK.. after consulting with several of the top pathologist and oncologist in the country, they have finally named the tumor after 2 weeks. It is very rare and called a Follicular Dendritic Cell Tumor. David started his chemo today and should be getting out of the hospital within the next day or so. We are keeping the faith that the chemo will work. Unfortunately once he is released, we may be on our own to pay for future treatments since he has no insurance. We are praying that medicaid is going to pay, but it's going to be a long wait to find out. Anyway, just wanted to let you know that we appreciate you vibes and prayers.
