Title: Jonny was right...
Post by Paul98 on Jun 5th, 2008 at 12:45pm
It's cow farts!  Farts in general to be precise.  Those wiley New Zealanders have come up with a solution.  They are going to save the planet one a$$hole at a time.  I'm sure the tree hugging bunnymen will want laws passed so that every anus on the planet passes the green test and smells like petunias. ;D

Seems that science already has the answer.

A notable feature was the large inter-sheep variability in daily methane emission (factor of 1.4 range) that could not be attributed to variable intake. This would appear to suggest an appreciable diversity of methanogenetic response to digestion, and may be significant in the search for strategies to control emissions of this greenhouse gas.

The results support the view that young wether sheep have a lower methane yield than mature sheep and that methane yield is higher from pastures of poor feeding value.

Individual sheep emission rates were highly variable...

Emission rates were poorly correlated with animal live weight or dry matter intake but represented an average dietary energy loss of 3.6%.

gene research seemed a good idea with such variability

...methane is a by-product of cellulose break down, generated by the microbial community in the rumen.

Methane emission represents an energy inefficiency in the digestive process, so reducing its production will benefit both nutritional efficiency and the environment -- a win-win situation.

New Zealand... agriculture industry is required to fund research on ways to reduce agriculture methane emissions.

I don't know...?  Potential solution to the energy issue.

We should tap it.
