You need a non rebreather mask and must get at least 15 lpm flow rate.  Never heard of BC powder.  Ask about predisone, Verapamil, and lithium for preventatives.  Good luck and let us know how you make out

Kev,

BC powder is nothing more than a glorified aspirin.  Won't touch a CH BUT it will definetly eat up your insides.

B. C. Powder Chemical Information

aspirin

caffeine - A naturally occurring xanthine derivative with central nervous system (CNS) stimulating activity. Due to the structural similarity to adenosine, caffeine binds to and blocks adenosine receptors, thereby preventing the inhibitory effects of adenosine on nerve cells. This leads to stimulation of medullary, vagal, vasomotor, and respiratory centers in the brain; and the release of epinephrine. Physiologic responses can include bradycardia, tachycardia, vasoconstriction, CNS excitablility, increased respiratory rate, increased blood pressure, increased blood flow to muscles, decreased blood flow to skin and inner organs, and release of glucose by the liver. Due to the interaction between adenosine A2A and dopamine D2 receptors, caffeine can also indirectly increase the levels of dopamine in the brain.

salicylamide

Allen, please ask your Dr. for a prescription for 02, and stop taking the BC.  Your stomach will thank you.

a 15 lpm regulator, with a non-rebreather mask and as many e-tanks as you need per week during your cycle.

Hi Allen! Welcome to the nut house.  Glad you're finding better weapons already (O2!).  Good luck with the Dr and let us know how you make out.

Hi Allen,

Welcome aboard!

All BC Powder is is aspirin in a powder form that "might" act a little quicker than aspirin in pill form.  It won't touch CH, and wouldn't get into your system in time for most of us if it did.  All it does is to give you the feeling that you have "done" something for the pain.

There is a lot of great info here about O2.  Print out what is pertinent to your discussion with your Dr and take it with you.  Insist on the proper set up or it will do NO good, and you will think you are one that it doesn't work for.  Key factors:  1)  15lpm Minimum,  2)  Non-rebreather mask, to not allow any outside air in.  3) enough in the prescription to allow at least 30 mins supply times the number of hits you experience within the time period covered.

I have had good success with Kudzu as an preventative.  It is herbal, so there is no need for a prescription, and it doesn't have the side effects some of the medications have.  It doesn't work for everyone, NOTHING does, but is relatively inexpensive, but sometimes hard to find.  See the Meds and Treatments page for more info on it.

Welcome to the board, I wandered for years too before stumbling onto this nut house! Many find the best results from a 2 pronged approach, a good preventative regimen and a good abortive regimen.

Preventatives: This is something you take daily, while on cycle, the goal being to reduce the intensity and the frequency of your attacks. I use lithium, 1200 mg a day, blocks about 80% of my attacks. Many good prevents to read about on the meds page and discuss with your doc. Verapamil and topomax are 2 other prevents I've seen people have success with. WARNING! What works for one person doesn't necessarily work for another!! Many find they end up with a combo of prevents before they see results.

Abortives: A headache starts now what? Many of us have success with oxygen, certainly worth a shot. I occasionally use the imitrex injectables but the lithium and oxygen have been working so well that's a rarity.
Slamming the energy drinks, those containing caffeine and taurine, works to abort an attack for many.

We have a rare condition, sucks to be us! ;) What that really means is it's our job to learn all we can about CH, then partner up with an open minded doc and plan our treatment. This is NOT a conditon where you sit down and tell the doc to fix you, most know too little about it! Good luck and welcome home.

welcome to the group Alan.

I use prednisone and verapamil as prevents.  This time around, I don't use any abortives as my attacks are only lasting 15min to 1/2hr and are only k7-k8 or less.  (I'm thankful for that)

Hope you find something that works for you soon.  Lots of info here to go over with your dr.

                                 good luck
