Ok, Bill and I chatted about this last week.  We pondered on a few issues...

#1 The Best Western wasn't the fanciest place we had all ever stayed at, however the price was right, it had a decent breakfast and we convinced them to open the bar up for all you damn smokers (just kiddin)  ;)  It really was the onlyvplace to congregate together.

So the question here is...would everyone be interested in going back to the same place if I could get all of the above back on the table....OR

#2 Would you like for me to look into the Crowne Plaza across the street (convention hotel this year) for room rates?  They have the bar, which seems to have normal hours during the day (I think), open areas to smoke (bar), a restaurant inside (TGI's) and the hallways are a normal room temperature.

My only problem with Crowne Plaza is I would need a buddy to travel with me in the elevators at all times...just sayin!  :D

SO...I hate to really open a can of worms on asking so many questions, but I know that some (not just us) were a little bummed with the hotel when we got there.

Let me know what everyone is thinking and I can start making calls.

The rooms were fine and the place they let us hang out was great. The only problem was the hallways were not heated. I have never been to a place like that before.

But we will go wherever. It doesn't matter to us.

The Best Western DID have some cold flipping halls!!  BUT, the staff there was MUCH more receptive and helpful to our needs.  They bent over backwards to make our stay a good experience.  AND they were very reasonably priced!

The Crown Plaza does have an area for smoking, 24/7.  The halls are not freezing.  For MOST people, the elevators worked just fine .... (Heehee)  The down side of them is that they are quite a bit more money to stay there.  AND they try to nickle dime you to death for things that are normally free: $$$ for an in-room refrigerator ... $$$ for an in-room microwave ... $$$ for in-room internet.  BUT, the free shuttle service, within five miles, was pretty awesome, though.

Myself, I would think the lower price would be better.

Well Christine must have ESP with all you clusterheads because I got home for the gym today and she called.  She was doing a simple follow-up on our stay from January 2009, and we ended up booking the rooms for January while I was on the phone.

So she is supposed to be sending me an email confirmation of our room block by the end of the day with a group #.  As of now this is what we discussed for January...

Round trip air fare is $323 ... I think I will hold off a bit to see if the price goes down ...

Maybe I will look into driving ... MapQuest says it is 14 hours 50 minutes ... 926 miles ... Hmmm ... Roughly guessing 25 MPG, and gas at $3.00 per gallon, that comes to $112.00 ...

I think I have a little bit of time, before I have to commit myself to method of getting there ...

That's not exactly true Jimmer; the sun have the outside warmer than the fricken hall ways at all times.  But nothing beats the price and the friendly & cooperate staffers..

According to my contact, Catherine Sutton, at the hotel, we should be able to make reservations as of today.

Not sure we'll make this one, it's about 3 weeks before the wedding and while there's nothing on the calendar today, rest assured our wonderful daughter will want us for something that weekend!  We'll see how it goes.

The way I understand the proposed smoking ban is this.... ( if anyone cares)

If the ban is passed it will only be for the county, for now.  The city of St. Louis will not even consider putting it on the ballot unless the county passes it first.  This means that you all could still  come to STL and enjoy your freedom to smoke.  You would just have to change where you are staying and come into the city. :)

Thomas and I have been using them since May. I have not touch a real cig since then. The great thing is that I no longer have to step out side to "smoke" and because they do not burn tobacco the do not fall within the ban. Although I do not use them while in most places that I would not smoke any way most bars have been willing to let me use them. I can stay in non smoking hotel room and use them because there is not a smell left behind like tobacco. They do however take some getting use to.

OK - I have a snag in the plans. Thomas works so he will not be able to attend.

It's always been called Dav-CON...or now Louie-CON.  It is a get together or a meet and greet.  It's not a convention.  OUCH puts on the convention in July.  I've had many people (newbies) ask me why are there 2 conventions and I've had to explain each time.

Could we call it something else?   St. Louis get together, or meet and greet or something else...orgy, "freeze your a$$ off in January for CHer's"

There are many distributors of these e-cigs.  I ordered mine from Awsome Vapor. 

Also, rather than purchacing and tossing away the cartriges, there are distributors that sell what is called e-liquid.  Then you simply refill the cartriges with the fluid. 

I've found this much cheaper over the last couple of months to be cheaper than regular ciggs.  In fact I haven't bought a pack since.  I do have an old pack in the truck that is getting stale. 

From time to time, batteries and automizers need replacing.  Sometimes you may want new cartriges to refill as sometimes they will crack.  But all in all, it costs ~$60 a week for regular smokes.  My invetment for 2 months has been $126 including an extra battery, extra automizer and 2 bottles of e-liquid.  Savings of $354.

sorry for being the newbie here. But I have read all the posta and am not sure what louiecon is. Could some one explain. I would like to come and meet all you cluster heads for the first time. Just talking to some last week for the first time, I broke down like a  baby. Can't imagine actually meeting someone.

My wife's grandmother (who became a really good excuse to go last year) is moving after Christmas this year.  So, I either have to convince the entire family to take a road trip for the weekend.... or I have to come by myself. (the third option I cant say out loud).

Jrcox.... if you can make it, you should go.... if you think talking to someone on the phone did that to you.... imagine hanging out with a bunch of people who you don't have to explain yourself to.

I don't think there is a CHer I have met in person who didn't make an impact on me.

Plus, there is Ragazzis!!!

If you thought you broke down like a baby talking with another clusterhead, just wait!  My first time when I walked into the hotel in Davenport and saw Thomas I just knew he was a clusterhead, and he recognized me as one.  We gave each other a big hug and both must have squeezed to hard, cause we both had eyes that were leaking!

When you leave, you will break down.  I promise. 

I drove 2 1/2 hours to stay 45 minutes and have to turn around and drive back the first time because that was all the time I had.  It was worth it, and I would do it again if I had to, but I'll also do whatever it takes to be sure I have more time than that.

I would say you could car-pool with us..but after looking at a map, I'd have to say nope, that won't work.  I'm way to far South and east of you in Kentucky.  However Terry Gore is in Davenport, maybe you could swing by and pick him up and share gas costs.  At least he is on your way.   ;D

  No matter what you have to sacrifice in order to save money for this...it will be worth it.

The first time I ever met anyone with CH was 11 years ago in Atlanta at the OUCH convention.  I flew clear across the U.S. from Calif. to meet a group of people I didn't know from Adam.  I was kind of scared and 1/-way there I said to myself, "WTF are you doing?  These people could be scam artists for all you know"  Up til then all they were, were black squiggles on a monitor.

Elaine picked me up at the airport and before we got to the first red light, I knew we'd be friends forever.  That whole week-end and every convention since then,  has been something I wouldn't  miss unless I'm pinned beneath a Mack truck. LOL

I've watched new people show up at these get-togethers and they're all kinda wary at first and before long they've got tears in their eyes from the love and care that they are shown.

It is an experience you will not believe until you are there.  You will experience emotion and connection with total strangers that you hesitate to allow your own family to see, but will be unable to stop yourself.  When you meet another person who understands you and what you experience and feel, and you don't have to explain yourself or hide when the beast comes to visit it is totally liberating.  You will be able then to interact with understanding with others on the board in ways you could not before, because you will know them as flesh and blood people, not just a screen name and a bunch of dots on a phosphor screen.  Even people you may not agree with, or would normally associate with will become a part of your life that you will never be able to forget.  You will find yourself bonding to total strangers more closely than your own kin, and liking it!

When you leave, you will break down.  I promise.  I drove 2 1/2 hours to stay 45 minutes and have to turn around and drive back the first time because that was all the time I had.  It was worth it, and I would do it again if I had to, but I'll also do whatever it takes to be sure I have more time than that. To Joe and anyone else that doesn't already know:

     It is freaking cold this time of the year.  A lousy jean jacket is NOT sufficient.  We'll be inside most of the time, but to and from the car,  one can get frost-bite, so bring warm clothes. 

After having crap coffee in hotels for the last 3 weeks on the road, I'm bringing my coffee maker, grinder, and several gourmet coffees I got for Christmas if anyone wants good coffee.   ;D

I've sort of kept up with this. One question, will there be any O2? Kirk is still getting hit, and I don't know if our supplier will be able to deliver what we need by then.

We are going to try to make it, just need to see what's happening with his head.

Call the Best Western, Have them page Capt. Jones. I or someone near me will come get you from there. Now that right there is some simple directions. Well folks, it's with sadness that I tell you we will not be joining you in St. Louis this year.  DJ has been extremely busy these last few months and with an upcoming 3 year inspection scheduled for February, he is unable to get any sort leave right now.  On top of long work days it seems Saturdays will be included in the mix...yuck!

We hope everyone has a wonderful time!  I will double and triple check to make sure the bar is open for you all to enjoy during the day...and I bet I can talk the bartender into staying open a little late too!

:'( :'( :'( :'( Dearest  :'(Steph, I am sssssoooo sorry that you, my DEEJ and 2 handsome (honorarily) Grandsons will not be in St. Louie... I have only attended one CH (Richmond) gathering that some of you guys weren't around..including when Brandon was still in the oven ;D.  And even at the OUCH Convention in Richmond, your presence was felt through balloon cloning  ;D.
