Title: Method of dealing with pain Post by mattwilsonfl on Aug 11th, 2014 at 2:50pm
Basically what I am suggesting is that you accept the pain you receive. Signs of NOT accepting the pain are things like moving around, then once you stop moving around maybe things like putting hands on your head, or thinking angry negative thoughts. Basically the trick is to act like the pain isn't even there. It will be hard, it will feel impossible to do this, and it will not happen instantly--one has to devote oneself to one's goal of not doing anything for sometimes up to 30 minutes, but one you reach it you will be in bliss, (not just a state of complete painlessness) and to top it off you will permanently be a mentally stronger, more in control person--this will result in greater happiness and success in your life.
By doing nothing, I mean literally that. If your jaw relaxes to the point where you are drooling on your chest, you cannot wipe it away. you literally cannot act. |

Given your suggestion of 30 minutes of accepting the pain I'd strongly suggest using either oxygen or injectable imitrex, both of which will kill the pain in a matter of minutes.
Are you working with a headache specialist with CH skills and experience so you don't have to endure so much pain that you have your own coping strategy for it? |

Do you have CH. I'm betting not. If you do then you are welcome to accept it if you want to. You can have mine if you like.
Otherwise, I'm with potter - with bells on. |

I speak only from my pain and my handling of pain, but holding still while getting a CH hit is completely, totally, absolutely physically impossible for me. Maintaining any sense of relaxation during a hit is inconceivable. There are versions of bio feedback which have been discussed at length on the board, with varying degrees of success. None worked for me, I would certainly not discourage anyone from using them to assist with their processing the pain of CH, but for me it's oxygen, imitrex, and the D-3 regimen. To each their own.

When I was dancing with the beast, and at the same
crushing my head with my hands, had about as much chance of stopping him in his tracks, as stopping religious callers knocking my door. Hoppy. |

ha ha ha, thankyou for being so lenient Joe...
It is interesting though on peoples theories on mind over matter and pain, Hell, I think i've broken just about every bone in my body and pretty well abused the hell out of it with sport, I can understand there's a mind state to be in to accept pain better ! I think that's really to just relax and don't tense up and basically don't panic, but these people I believe have absolutely no concept of a full blown kip 10 cluster attack ! and the sheer pain levels it gets too ! I don't argue with people now, the topic sometimes comes up, and there's always one idiot that's had more pain than anyone else ! we all know the type ! I just sit there and hear the terror from a paper cut they endured or similar and just say to myself, you don't know how lucky you are lol I think I came as prepared as any body could have been in experiencing pain, but learned fairly quickly, a pain level I'd never reached before with these damn clusters. perhaps we could invent a pill that these people could take to induce a full blown cluster pain experience before they offer relieving advice for those of us that experience it ! Im picking they would find another vocation ! lol col |

G'day MattWillson, welcome, and thanks sincerely for your advice. Every little bit helps.
Many CHeads have their own little techniques for dealing with this monster so your first post is profoundly interesting. I wish you well, friend, and look forward to your second post. |

Dear Mattwilsonfl
I used to meditate so I know the technique. And YES the first thing I did when the BEAST hit me for the first time, was that TRY to meditate... I COULDN'T. Mine starts with "the shadow" and then I get to work: Oxygen, strong coffee and ice.My ONLY goal is to stop the pain. This attack has subside as I'm getting it twice a week, only ;D Of course I followed Mike's (Veteran Cluster) advice :increased my Vitamin D to 2000,started to take Omega 3. I'm researching another tip when I can prove it work for me, I will post it. Good luck ! |

Some CHers do say meditation, guided imagery, biofeedback and the like help them. And it is true that hysterical makes the attack worse. Great for KIP1-5 I guess...
