Title: Verapamil and Vitamin D
Post by Jackie A on Jul 29th, 2016 at 1:02pm
I've been reading some articles that state you should not take large doses of Vitamin D if you are on Verapamil.  I just stated taking Verapamil on Wednesday (160 mg) per day and I started the Vitamin D regimen on Monday.  I've been taking 20,000 of D3 everyday along with the co-factors.  Should I stop one or the other?  Thanks, Jackie

Hi Jackie,
I've never been on Verapamil and don't know much about it.
I do know though that i have recently read on here that verap can interfere with the absorbtion of D3 in to your body. If i remember correctly someone mentioned that the absorbtion of D3 by the body was down to below 5% when taking verap.
Also some folk seem to stop taking the calcium from the regimen when on verap.
Someone also said that they stopped taking the verap and gave priority to Batch's D3 regimen.
Someone else will have to answer your question with more accuracy and knowledge than me.

Maybe send a PM to Batch.

All the best

Jackie,

Like Thierry, I've never been on Verapamil. The reason is that when I first discussed this with my Doc we agreed to try the D3 first, and if it didn't work we would try Verapamil.

Consequently, I've never been on Verapamil.

Talk to your Doctor.

Best,

Peter.

Peter and Thierry,

Thanks for posting.  I was in remission for around 8 or 9 years and never took anything when I went through this before.  There are actually options out there now, so I'm trying to figure out what is the best route for me.  The bottom line is that as much as I remember how painful this was in the past, I was not prepared for it this time.  I would like to just do the D3 Regimen but I'm kind of afraid since being on both since the beginning of the week has made a difference.  I'm just not sure which one helped.  I know that it's better to just do the Vitamin D3 but I want to wait a couple of days to make sure that I am in fact getting better.  Thanks!

Hey Jackie,
It's good to know that you're getting some relief.
Is good to go with your intuition as it's your body, your head and your pain.
If you could get your hands on O2, i would definitely say to dump the verap and choose D3 with a few days in a row of loading doses (as discussed with you on other thread).

O2's really great for aborting an attack.
You can read up about O2 by clicking on the yellow tab on the left of your screen that says "oxygen info".

All the best

Jackie, seeing that your on such a low dose of verapamil I'm thinking it's the vitamin D regimen that's working for you, so maybe stop the verapamil and see how you go.

Thanks for the comments. I'm thinking it's the D3 that is helping too

Thanks Thierry!  By the way, I spoke with my pharmacist yesterday and he made a good point. If Vitamin D was dangerous to take with Verapamil then the label would say to stay out of the sun. Makes sense.

Hi Jackie,
you're right there.
The thing is not that it is or it is not dangerous,
it is that verap seems to considerably reduce the absorbtion of D3 -from what i read here on a thread called

"Verapamil blocking gastro absorption of Vitamin D3"

In the "cluster headache specific" section.

All the best

I just read through that also. What I understood was to take them as far apart during the day as possible and to increase vit d dose.
