Title: Medicare and Oxygen???? Post by Bob Morgan on Jul 28th, 2017 at 11:53pm
New to the board and I may have missed it being covered before. If it has been covered sorry for bringing it up again. Have just started trying the oxygen after getting the neurologist to write a prescription, to then find out that Medicare does not recognize headaches as one of their qualifiers for getting Oxygen through them, or having them cover it. Has other people ran into this, did you get any resolution, any recommendations??? Also retired Military, but pretty much Tricare follows Medicare guidelines. Any help/suggestions appreciated.

Thank you very much for the information. Now I have some more reading and digesting to put it together. It sounds like you have definitely tried a lot to make things better. It is just sad that the policy makers have pre-set minds, and lack of consideration for others. 22 years Navy here, but instead of flying above the waves, I rode around underneath the waves. Thanks again for the info Bob |

Hey Bob,
We have one exceptionally capable Navy... Boomer or Fast Attack? I live about 10 minutes South of Submarine Base Bangor, Washington. Take care, V/R, Batch |

Bob,
I did some additional checking... As of 1 Feb 2008, the TRICARE Policy Manual 6010.57-M covered the use of home oxygen therapy for cluster headache per the following: Oxygen And Oxygen Supplies Issue Date: February 14, 1984 Authority: 32 CFR 199.4(c)(3)(iv) 1.0 HCPCS PROCEDURE CODES Level II Codes A4611 - A4629, E0424 - E0480, E1353 - E1399, E1400 - E1406 2.0 POLICY 2.1 Oxygen is a prescription medication and the following benefits may be cost-shared: 2.1.1 Oxygen and the supplies and equipment related to its administration; 2.1.2 Oxygen in gas (to include oxygen concentrators) and liquid form; 2.1.3 Stationary and/or portable oxygen units; and 2.1.4 Oxygen therapy for migraine and/or cluster headaches. Print this out and take it to your PCP/neurologist and home oxygen therapy provider. Tell them you have cluster headache and that you want an M-size oxygen cylinders delivered weekly, CG-540 regulator capable of 25 liter/minute flow rate and a non-rebreathing oxygen mask to abort Cluster Headache. This should help. V/R, Batch |

To give you a follow-up on your suggestion about Tri-Care for the Oxygen. I took a printout of your message about Tri-Care and home oxygen use. I gave a copy to the Neurologist, and a copy to a Home Medical Supplier that I got a bottle of Oxygen from (at my expense). The Medical Supplier gave me a heads up on what I may expect and it came through. Evidently as Medicare is the primary, and Tri-Care is the secondary, they go by the Medicare guidelines. I called Tri-Care West and asked them the questions, they said since I was on Medicare, then they would not cover it, but suggested and gave me the number for Tri-Care for Life. I called and talked with them, and they said yes, as I was on Medicare they would not cover it. I then asked point blank, that since 2 and a half years ago, when I was on Tri-Care and they would cover it, and now they won't, isn't this a case of "Age Discrimination" as we are forced to go to Medicare at 65. Answer I just got was we are just following policy as set forth. So, I guess it is time to start writing Congress Members. |
