I Wonder Why....

the media isn't reporting anything about the success in Iraq?  Casualties way down.  Iraqies turning in weapon caches.  Cities returning to normal.

And we don't hear shit!

Actually, I heard something about it but frankly, if you want real international news on this or most anything serious, you have to read newspapers. The corporate giants that have ruined tv news don't like anything boring to get in the way of Viagra ads. I have to wonder why these good Republican businessmen aren't running the stories though......

Is it the people who speak the words or persons in charge of feeding the information to those who spew?
Frankly, it's the culture of today. There is more money in broadcasting Britney Spears or Paris Hilton's latest fiasco than important information. Talk about white trash....the both of them. But I digress.
Many things [parents complaining bout kidz and thier music--my dad must be spinning in his little urn now that Frank Sinatra is part of my collection] are the same from when I grew up [I am 45 YO] but I do not recall the same about the newsbroadcast media.
Are you saying that you do not trust Brian Williams or Lestor Holt? I put them in the same genre as Huntley and Cronkite do but they are puppets of the money grubbing media tycoons who sell out to advertisers and trashy viewers.
Of course, this is my opinion. I could be wrong.

I'm just saying that times have changed a lot and not for the better. We USED to READ the papers - then the "old guys" (40-50 year olds) would get up in the morning and go to the coffee shop and talk things over. Occasionally our congressman would drop in and have coffee and get into the discussions...

Back during the Korean War there were some "lively" discussions (mom used to send me to the coffee shop with Dad to keep him in line).

But people knew MORE about what was going on for the most part (including the kids) than in today's world. I can't remember a time I didn't know who my congressman or Senator was, but ask a kid today and they'll look at you like you stepped off Mars - they probably don't even know what a senator is or where Washington DC is for that matter.

Bob I don't know the answer to your question -- I guess the media only reports what people will watch. They just like the "bad" news.

Several year’s ago (and of course I didn’t write it down anywhere I can find it) I said that the eventual, ultimate disappointment will be the convergence of TV and the internet, to the point where there is very little ability to distinguish between the two. We get closer everyday to this reality. So that eventually we will be able to pick all of our own input from the internet and dispense with TV. The problem being that most of us aren’t really all that creative, or able to seek out the kind of input that would be all that good. So, will we all just continually roll our favorite Seinfeld episodes, over and over again? Thinking how nice it is to have no new input to mess with our karma?

And now a lot of us don't anymore. Why? Well, I can only speak for myself. I refuse to give one nickel to an organization of bleeding heart feel-gooders that are less interested in giving me the news than they are in shaping my vote.

I dunno Brew. I read our local paper that makes Rupert Murdock look like the Daily Worker. After reading the obits, I dutifully get at The Buffalo News.....just a tad on the other side...

News is all about ratings.  The ratings determine the cost of advertizing during that time slot.

Not surprising you don't see any success stories being broadcast.  Good news for the country is bad news for Democrats and we know who the news media backs.

Me, I scan the local paper to see if there is anything interesting going on in the local area and then I read the intellectual section (funnies).

I happened upon a public radio interview and a guy was talking about how we are training in the skilled trades there.

As to handing the fighting over to the Iraqi's, well, I watched a documentary instead of our efforts '68-'73 of Vietnamization of that war.  Hope we learned alot.

Ok. It's time for a liberal to admit that this is so. There's a reason for it of course. From day one, Bush & Co. have treated the press as an enemy. The party of censorhip and that made all those fake news conferences tends to get not-so-hot press. It's their own damned fault. There is no mystery here.

Walter Cronkite admitted years ago that local TV news programs (where network news reporters get their start) usually gather news where it's to be found. That's usually from the streets or poor areas so they get closer to people in serious trouble or that have greater needs, rather than those at the country club. Because of this exposure, they will be more likely to lean toward the left. It just makes sense.

The job of the press is to keep self-important leaders and despots in the cross-hairs as historically things like war or horrors like WTC are used to put a lid on information and run roughshod over people's rights. Ever since McCarthy and Edward R. Murrow, the GOP has been a better target and rightly so but you'll find that Roosevelt and LBJ were hammered every day by the press, too. From the middle ages to the present, civilization does better when the press looks after the little guy.
