My roses are dying!
Jun 30th, 2008 at 9:18am

Does anyone know anything about roses?  I have a garden full of rose bushes and every last one of them is dying.  I have fertilized them, cut them back, sprayed them with spray for diseases but they are still dying!

The new growth that is coming in looks really strange.  The stalks look almost deformed.  They have very spindly leaves and there are too many thorns on each one.  The flowers that bloom have almost a crape paper look to them, all crinkled an faded looking.

Any suggestions on how to save my garden would be greatly appreciated!

PF wishes,

Jeannie

Are these new roses or are they estabished roses that have been there for awhile?  Could you possibly put a pic up of the new growth?  When did you cut them back?  (I've been raising roses for over 15 years).  What types of roses are they, ie, tea, floribunda, etc.

How often are you watering them?

Hi Carolyn,

They are established roses.  Very old in fact.  I have lived in this home for 16 years and they were here when I moved in.  Before that my in-laws lived here.  They were my mother-in-law's.   Maybe they are just  dying of old age?  I think that there are a variety of different types.  American Beauty, Peace, and tea roses ( they did not bloom this year at all).  I cut them back in the fall and have been trying to cut off the parts that appear to be diseased.  They have been getting too much water as we live in the mid-west and are getting lots of rain.

Thanks for your help!

Drowning it is then!  Hopefully they will get a chance to dry  out some.  I'd probably stop feeding them for right now.  Roses are fairly hardy and will come back even after drastic conditions (I ignored mine copletely for several years and the majority of them survived).

Hi Carolyn,

Thanks for the advice.  Unfortunately it's raining again!  I also found Japanese beetles on my roses yesterday!  I can't win!

Take care,

Jeannie

Buy you some Japanese beetles traps at wal mart. I have those pest and the traps work, just don't put the traps to close to the roses. Use some seven dust on them keep them away.
