I saw that on TV a few days ago.  They showed not only this poor woman, but a couple of others who died in hospital waiting rooms.  Since I have no "sound" on this computer, I couldn't hear the video, but I believe this woman had been sitting in the waiting room (which appears pretty empty to me) for over 24 hours without being seen or treated.

A couple of years ago, my closest friend's husband had been in a car wreck.  He was transported to the hospital by EMS.  She called me and I drove her to the hospital.  She went in to the  emergency room with him, while I waited in the emergency waiting room.  There was a man and his wife who were there before I was, and I could tell she was in extreme distress, unable to breathe and in a lot of pain.  I sat there for a good two hours, and she had still not been seen, and was becoming more desperate.  The husband walked over to the nurse's station and loudly said "she needs help here!  She has chest pains, difficulty breathing and it's getting worse.  We've been here three hours!  What are you going to do about it?".

Know what happened?  A "rent-a-cop" security guard came over to the man, grabbed him by the arm and told him to sit back down and that the hospital would get to his wife when they could.

The good news, if you can call it that after a three hour wait, was that another nurse overheard the whole thing, went over to the wife sitting in the waiting room, took one look, and immediately called for "stat" help and they took her in to triage.

My friend's husband, transported by ambulance with minor injuries, was immediately seen.  This poor woman, with possibly fatal heart problems, driven in by her husband, sat for three hours, and, based on the nurse's reaction when she looked at the woman, could have died sitting right there.

Lesson - If something is seriously wrong and you need to go to a hospital - dial 911 and have them transport you in.  Never come in any other way because you will just go on the waiting list and will not be seen quickly.

Our hospital emergency rooms are a complete and total disaster.  This video and the others shown on TV are proof.

Sandy

How can people be that cold and heartless.

Those people walking by the 78 yr old hit and run was equally sickening.

I had my mom in ER one night and we'd been there for several hours. I asked a nurse how long it was going to be and she snickered and said, "Well you haven't been here 8 hours yet!"  I called my doctor at home -- we had a doctor see us in about 5 minutes and the nurse was fired.

After that I called my doctor BEFORE we went in and we didn't have a problem getting in immediatly. It's a crying shame what's happened to EMERGENCY ROOMS! Someone needs to look up the definition of EMERGENCY!

Robert Cohen [Kirkland & Ellis Law Firm]:
"It's an emergency room, It's not a bus terminal"

Narrator on video:
"A spokeswoman for New York city's hospitals says that doctor seen on the tape has been fired."
"The two security guards and nurse, suspended but that they also could be fired."
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Three of them suspended and they also could be fired.
They could be fired?
Besides making sure the other three are fired [as was the doctor], how about all four of them being brought up on charges of neglect leading to the unnecessary death of another human being?!

Man, that's sad.
That dude in the clip said it best.  This isnt a bus terminal, this is a place to get emergency medical service.

I don't know what the answer to this problem is.  Us suckers are paying through the nose for service but the hospitals are going bankrupt.  The insurance companies and the government are the only ones getting any money.  They use that money to hire attorneys to keep it that way.

What a shame
