I need to hear more of this clip before I make a decision about what he is talking about.

Not saying its right, not saying its wrong, I just need more info before I can make a judgement about the context of the whole speech.

I do have my opinion though. If I were to go to Poland, I would not insist that the Polish people speak English just to please me because I don't speak Polish and don't want to learn.

My Grandfather and his Family immigrated here from Croatia in 1899 (Legally) and came through Ellis Island N.Y

He worked at Pabst Brewery and retired after 35 years and never insisted that anyone should learn how to speak Croation, as a matter of fact, he learned to speak English just by listening and talking to everyone else. He flew an American flag in front of his house and was proud to be an American citizen and never asked for any special treatment from anyone because he was from a different country. He was just happy to be in the Land Of The Free.

Barbs Grandparents were from Palermo Sicily, immigrated here legally in 1914 also through Ellis Island. They both spoke very little English but they learned to deal with it, worked their asses off and gave their children everything they could and never complained about the lack of communication. They were just proud to be here.

My point is this. The language of this country is ENGLISH! Either learn it or go back to the country that you came from where everyone understands you.

I will try to learn all of the words I can from your language but I am not going to take special classes just to apease you, just as you would not go to special classes to learn English in your own country just to apease me!

I am so sick of this shit!

Most people in Europe learn to speak two or three languages-I do not understand why Americans are so against doing so.  It facilitates business and helps with communication.

It's merely the difference between being a host and being a guest. English doesn't have "official language" status in the US, but it should.

Sandra

European countries are like American States in proximity.  If every State in the US spoke a different language, Americans would be motivated to speak many languages too.

Until the recent immigration of Central and South Americans (legal and illegal) who are unwilling to learn the language of their host country, knowing only English wasn't an issue.  Immigrants to this country from other cultures have traditionally taken the time to assimilate into our culture.  The first step on that path is to learn English.

These recent additions to our population want to retain and foster their pre-existing culture.  This is not a flavoring added to the American melting pot.  It is a squatting.  These people do not want to be Americans.  They want to benefit from what our country has to offer without becoming part of it.

I encourage my children to learn another language.  Some have taken up German.  Some have taken up Spanish.  Learning another language is a good practice.

The idea that American's need to learn a specific language in order to live in our own country is the rub.

In response to Sander:
In a small country such as Holland or Belgium that is surrounded and in close proximity to other countries that speak a different language a second language is necessary. This geopgraphical placement makes it advantagous and even necessary to learn the language of your neighbors. It is also advantages to the ones learning a new language because they actually get to pratcie and use the new language.
In the U.S. a second language is often a requirement in most schools but since there is almost no need to use the second langauage it is quickly forgotten or never properly learned.
Spanish speaking folks seem to have an ingrained refusal to learn a second language no matter where they are or how long they have been a "guest" in another country. This isn't unique to the U.S. I see it in just about any country that has a large Hispanic population that I have been to.
There are of course acceptions to this generalization but that acception usually applies to better educated and better skilled Hispanics.

An example of odd exception, but of no consequence.  I may be wrong but I don't think there is any native language of Belgium.  Those near the French border may speak French and in closer proximity to Germany, German, making it very true that learning the language of your neighbors is necessary.

God help us if this guy gets in. This is America. English is spoked in America. If you want to learn another language I think that it is great, however, why do we have to accommodate individuals who are living in this country that do not speak the native language. I speak fluent spanish because I do business in South America. If I was going to move to another country I would take the time to learn the language. Take a trip to Miami and see just how bad it has gotten. Last time I was there I was by far the minority and not one word of English was spoken when I was in the city. It is really depressing to see what the dynamatcs of this country will be in 10 years.  Embarrassed

We have our share of language issues in Finland...
Learning Finnish is a necessity for everyone who wants to become a Finn. And the language is challenging to say at least.

Finland has two official languages - Finnish and Swedish - so every Finn must learn Swedish as well. And many, many Finns dislike learning Swedish, which doesn't make it easy.

I liked learning new languages so I learned Swedish, English, German and some Italian, Greek and Spanish at school. Smiley

Because our fearless leaders have not declared an official language. If they would, none of this would be an issue. But hey, we elect 'em, right?

And if you want to split hairs, English isn't the native language of this region. It was imposed upon the native inhabitants.

I am not voting for Obama but I agree with everything he says in that clip.

1. Obama clearly said that immigrants should learn English.  Did everyone miss that part?

2.  Whether necessity or not, every European speaks more than 1 language.  I have been to Europe twice and Asia once and I am embarrassed at how we are viewed all over the world because none of us teach our kids to be bilingual.  It isn't about being forced to learn a second language to live in this country, it is about learning a language to help us live in THIS WORLD.  Are our kids too stupid to learn a new language or are we so egotistical that we don't care if we can relate to people of other countries who speak other languages?

3.  See 1.  It is important to say that I think people who move to another country (or here) should learn to speak their language, period.  I don't care if the government declares the language official or not, they should learn the language

4.  I believe they found that kids taught a second language early in life actually learned English better as well.  I have no problem with our schools trying to push our kids to learn more and be smarter.  To me, this is about our kids having the best education possible, not some issue about immigrants.

Well...when I was in high school, girls usually learned French and the boys usually took German. Some of us took Latin too and Spanish was just becoming a popular course. There was only one class in 1962. God knows why I took Latin but it was still popular at the time and just as silly as today unless you were a doctor or pharmacist back then. Learning a second language at the time was common, even if it didn't stick. It's still a good idea but no one seems to care. Back in the 1960s, Swedish was taught every other year or somesuch in Jamestown, which at the time, had probably 15,000 Swedes. On that, my grandfather came here in 1913 and forbade anyone in the house but my great grandmother from using Swedish for chatter. His idea was that they should learn English. He did and had no accent that I can remember.

On what Obama said....reading it in the newspaper filters out crap like this. It was a suggestion, nothing more unless you live in the delightful world of political bloggers.

Like George Bush, I wish I spoke another language though...  Grin

I took a course in college called "Latin and Greek in the English Language." It's amazing how one views the English language differently when you start to see how much of it is imported.

With the exception of a few, I think it would behoove you all to learn to speak and write English before even thinking about attempting a second language.

As an immigrant to Denmark I am learning danish even tho English is a second language here. I am wondering if it is easy for Immigrants to learn English in America? It wasnt when I lived there. If I ever move home again I plan on organizing with a church or something to give free English lessons.
And if someone is misbehaving at the conventions then I vote for a road trip also. But I refuse to swim to America. I will need a cheap airline ticket. I have 7 brothers and 3 sisters and I am the oldest girl. My brothers are terrified of me. Please let me go pretty please.
