4.  I believe they found that kids taught a second language early in life actually learned English better as well.  I have no problem with our schools trying to push our kids to learn more and be smarter.  To me, this is about our kids having the best education possible, not some issue about immigrants. This is so true. In addition, children taught foreign languages early, learn them much faster. We teach our kids sign language now so that they can communicate with deaf kids. This is considered a foreign langauge credit in many colleges. Is this any different? Young children for the most part love to learn things that are unique and different. My students will come to my art room somedays and say things like "Buenas Dias" just to show off their new skills. Foreign languages help children grow up appreciating other cultures. OK enough of my 2 cents

Cash makes a very valid point about education. However, as Americans we should not have to speak in a forign language in our own country to get a point across. If someone is coming to this country to live or work they should have the common courtesy to learn English.

Why must so many Americans hang on to varying degrees of isolationism? It ain't healthy any more. It's a good thing to learn other languages. It helps people see more than one side of an issue and others appreciate the effort. It beats me why ignorance is a postive over here.

Well, I learned more about the ENGLISH language while taking Latin than I ever wanted to know and think all kids should be required to take it just to LEARN English.

Second languages are good and should be encouraged (never know when you'll need them) BUT, that being said - people coming to OUR country should at least TRY to speak OUR language.

For some reason the romance languages have always been over my head (Spanish, Italian, French, etc) and I've actually lived in countries that spoke them and tried my BEST to speak them. My BEST was so bad that most of the neighborhoods I lived in learned English in self defense, but they did it because they KNEW I was really trying. German I had no problem with and learned it when I lived there and can still commuicate pretty well today (after a few weeks of being exposed), but my point is -- I didn't expect the people in the other countries to CATER to me just because I happened to be in THEIR country as a GUEST.

Had a little trouble in England. Those darn Brits didn't understand "ya'll" at all. Kept really looking at me funny. Smiley But heck them "foreigners" up in Boston do the same darn thing. Wink

Think about it (seriously) from state to state here in the US, we speak differently. We speak the same language but from Texas to Boston it's a whole different language.

And Jonny I agree, we should only print our stuff out in ONE language and our Congress should decide what it's gonna be.

In a small country such as Holland or Belgium that is surrounded and in close proximity to other countries that speak a different language a second language is necessary. This geopgraphical placement makes it advantagous and even necessary to learn the language of your neighbors.

An example of odd exception, but of no consequence.  I may be wrong but I don't think there is any native language of Belgium.  Those near the French border may speak French and in closer proximity to Germany, German, making it very true that learning the language of your neighbors is necessary.

The two official languages spoken in Belgium are Dutch and French, with English a close third.  There was a study done a number of years ago that the best time to teach a child a foreign language is to start in Kindergarten.  A few specialized private schools do that; it is a shame that all public schools in the US do not.  Here in Germany (and other European countries) this is the system used-it makes life much easier with our global economy.
