Need some good vibes ....
Aug 7th, 2008 at 2:42pm

I have an appt today with my daughters pediatrician and could use some good vibes.

She in the last month has gone from a shy well behaved 5 year old to uncontrollably upset 90% of the time and showing signs of obssesive/comulsive behavior. She has always had slight symptoms but they have really come to a head. I am at my wits end and starting to feel like I have failed her somewhere. Me being the "Type A" mother and all. Embarrassed

I really dont want her to be on meds and am scared that this will be his answer. I really just want to know how to respond to her issues to make it better. I at this point have tried everything I know of.

Sorry for going on, but I am really nervous for the appointment today.

hugs and thanks,
Aubmari

If that is his answer, keep in mind that he's not the only pediatrician in the world. Get a 2nd opinion.

This is true. I guess I really just want to walk out of the appt feeling a little better about the situation than I do now.

I'll be thinking of you and your little girl.

I agree with Brew.   Maybe ask about getting a referral to a psychologist that can give you some ideas on behavior modification rather than meds.  If that fails then you could move to more drastic measures if needed.  Let us know how everything goes.   As I said, you'll be in my thoughts.

My 13 yr old daughter went from ADHD to OMG!!! She used to be hyper and daydreamy...now she's saying things like Everyone hates me ALL THE TIME. She hasn't been on meds in 2 years. Thought she'd grow out of it, now everyone thinks she may be Bi-Polar. Guess it's time for the doc again for her.

Thank you all for your vibes I am leaving in about 5 minutes for the appt and may just lose my lunch  between now and then. I will update tomorrow on the results.

Thanks again!

Lots of vibes coming your way. I'm with Brew. Look at more than one doctor. My idea is to use meds only as a last resort.

We're with you and keep in touch.

Aubmari,

Vibes, prayers, and good thoughts going up for you and your daughter.  I agree with all that has been said - also that pediatricians aren't the be all/end all when it comes to psychiatric diagnoses in children.  Always worth a visit to psychologist or a psychiatrist that does meds AND therapy and would be willing to try therapy of some sort or other options prior to going on medication.

A pretty good friend of mine's daughter had been dealing  with some OCD issues, and I would be happy to get in touch with him and ask how they ended up handling it.  I know he wouldn't have jumped right to medication if it could have been avoided.

Hang in there!!!

Hugz,
Carrie Smiley

maybe some childrens  therapy?   Better than filling her full of meds that she might not need.

After having 7 kids...I would look into that first.  Meds...after all other avenues have been exhausted.

You know your daughter better than anyone.  DON'T you dare forget that.   Wink

thank you all for your kind words.  Smiley

The appt. went alot better than I had anticipated. I went in and we talked for about 15 minutes. At the end of the conversation he said he definately thinks that there is reason for concern and that he believes that it is early signs of OCD.

He is going to talk to his partner and see if she is familiar with any good counselors in my area that specialize with this and start there. He said that he wants to try this for at least 3 months and if she is not showing improvement during this time than he would look at some type of meds.

I told him that I am willing to do whatever it takes and made it clear that I would prefer to try to help things without meds if possible and he agreed. (relief!!!!)

So all in all yesterday went well.

This parenting thing is, by far, the toughest thing I have ever had to do but definately couldn't live without her! Smiley and just want her to feel better.
