Possible to have little pain in the eye?
Aug 7th, 2008 at 10:08pm

I've read that the majority of the pain is in the eye for cluster headaches.
My question is if anyone ever had one that is mostly around the eye or in the temple region with little or no pain in the eye itself.

My eyeball itself never hurts.   My pain is exactly above the eye beginning where eyebrow starts  and definitely temple and of course back of my neck on my cluster side, roof of my mouth and jaw during attack.  After attack, neck sore, eyebrow area very very sore and temple very very sore too.

Yes, Roller, it is VERY possible.

In the beginning, I used to get the severe pain behind my eye.  But, as is typical, the beast has morphed so that I don't feel any pain in my eye anymore.  (On either side, as I am one of the "lucky" ones, that gets hit on both sides.)

I have plenty on my eyebrow, cheek, the side of my head, and especially my molars.

Jonny posted a picture of the trigeminal nerve, all of my aches suddenly made perfect sense. My pain was always behind the eye, I always felt if I pushed hard enough on the eye I could get to it!!

Perhaps best not to test what happens if you push your eye at various pressures, eh, Guiseppi?  Wink

Oh I shudder to think the damage I've done to my eye, teeth and head at various times, trying to "burrow down" to the source of my pain!!!!! Grin

I don't get eye pain. I get pain along the trigeminal nerve-trap, neck, ear, side and top of head along one side of my head. The pain always feels like it comes from the clamping down of all of my head and neck muscles-nothing so deep as my eye though.

Interestingly enough, I saw my Neuro about my epilepsy and decided to have a conversation about my Cluster with him, since he is also a cardio and headache specialist.

He indicated to me that my type of cluster is atypical and he didn't want me on triptans because of it. I had a shadow the other day and I noticed that my shoulder-which I am fighting an injury on-swelled and started popping when I moved it.

So I asked him if there was a possibility that there was an inflammatgory component to my headaches. He asked about my treatment during my last cluster and asked whether I was ever given any anti-inflammatory meds and I was. They gave me an injection of tramadol. It didn't kill the cluster, but it made a difference to the pain.

Long story short-he wants me to take Soma if my cluster returns and see if that takes care of it. I hope it will, but I guess we'll have to wait and see...my expectations are low.

Anyways, perhaps a bit long-winded. Hope I didn't hijack the thread too much!

Joe, if you only knew the damage I've done to my teeth over the years from this beast.  Just 2 weeks ago another of my cracked and weekened teeth broke off.  Seems at least 4 times a year another tooth breaks from the age and damage I caused during  those truely horrid years.

Once again...thank you Clusterbusters.
