Microsoft XP service pack 3

My automatic update for XP says service pack 3 is available.

I am very leery of installing it and having to reinstall and troubleshoot program problems.

I am starting this thread for feedback on installation problems and fixes.

This may be the last service pack available from Microsoft for XP and I fear there may be problems with it so as to force you to go out and purchase Vista.

Please be careful about accepting the license check off for this update if you have automatic updates set to on and pay attention to what you are updating.

Roland.

Been on SP3 for a long time now.  No problems, really.  There aren't any programs that I know about that required any reinstall (or anything else for that matter).

There is a small problem that could affect you. You'll know it happened if your updates begin to fail.  The solution is easy, just reregister some DLLs with Windows... some people end up reinstalling the whole thing for no reason becasue they can't figure out why updates never succeed. If that happens, let me know.  Odds are tiny, but it happens now and then.

I installed SP3 months ago and just got another "reminder" to update SP3 again . . . . .

Very strange.

But no other problems for me.

Ted just upgraded us to SP3 last weekend.  Have had no problems with it.  Good luck installing.

Um, I don't know how many of you have Athlon processors in their PC, but SP3 has a problem.  There is a DLL file that relates to intel power monitoring and will prevent the system from booting.

Google "Service Pack 3 Athlon" for more details.

With regards,

Ray

I dont have SP3, but every time I auto update WinXP update KB951748 and reboot...I can not connect to the internet. Something about throwing my Zone alarm into a funk.

There is a fix for it, just google the update and you will find it. I did that and it worked, but for some reason it didnt work for long so I deleted that update and will not allow it.

Yeah, SP3 (for XP) contains an update to fix a spoofing threat to the DNS-client (this time not a M$ error Wink). This patch colides with ZoneAlarm.

Work around: In ZoneAlarm set
Program  Control / Internet Zone Security : from High to Medium.

Of course, there is a better solution: Once in a while get an update for ZoneAlarm. They have fixed this problem already a month ago.

I've installed it on one of my computers with no problems. I have yet to install it on one of my laptops. Just make sure you create a restore point before you download and install it.

You shouldn't have any problems, but if you are worried, be sure to back up first.
