Computer Gurus - Virus protection
Aug 25th, 2008 at 9:31pm

Ok, so I am old and senile and have been around since before man knew how to count ...

A long time ago, someone here gave the sites for GOOD virus protection that was free, and downloadable.

There was also spyware and ad aware stuff too.  The last time I formatted my hard drive I wiped them out and forgot to save their names.

Can anyone lead me to them again?  I am fairly certain my home laptop is crawling with eebie jeebie creepie crawlers in my CPU.

Thanks!

AVG is brilliant Chuck, I love it. I was recommended it by Bill along with a couple of other things he recommended, I can't remember what they are as they're on my PC at home but I'd highly recommend asking him, they found stuff my previous virus checker (Norton) and stuff hadn't ever found. I've been delighted with them

Hope that helps (even if it wasn't alot!)

Helen

Thanks, Helen.  When I did a Google search, I thought that one sounded familiar, but wanted to verify from those here first.

Thanks!

Not a guru here but I used AVG until the trial was up and I couldn't get updates anymore so I switched to Avast.

Mel thats odd as I still get daily updates on it (I think it's daily) I know it says it hasn't updated in a couple of days if the thing is turned off anyhow) did you have a trial version or the free version?

Helen, I'm pretty sure I had the free version. Undecided  No matter really now though, the avast works great.

Oh, and almost forgot, for adware/spyware, I use Spybot.  Hope that helps!

Thanks, Mel!  You are a PEACH!!!  (unlike that OTHER person who has entered into this thread)

Now, should I go with AVG, or go straight to Avast?

Here you go, Chuck.

Avast is the best anti-virus, it updates daily, or several times, depending on what threats are out there. Install it and forget about it.

Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register

Here is Spybot Search & Destroy, the official website. This is good for spyware and adware, although Avast actually picks up some of that.

There are a few "Spybot" websites, they are full of malware, this is the one you want, above.

Just remember, after you download the anti-virus, disconnect from the internet while you install it. Wink

Have fun!

Avast and Spybot for starters Chucky. Fedora 9 Linux in a dual boot configuration after that. So you can still play MS games.

As a fellow very early boomer, I thought that I'd chip in. I  have AVG and Spybot too. Free so far and they work for me.

I had to dump Norton because it blocked all kinds of stuff when I looked at ebay. Don't like paying for it either.

Wasn't Helen nice....... Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register

That and Norton is one of the biggest bloatware programs out there. Does a ton of nothing and drags your PC down while doing it.

and that smug prick Peter on the cover in the his lab coat like he is some doctor who is sitting on the cure for f-in cancer or something like that.
