Cute little girl ear ache! Any remedies? - UPDATE
Sep 2nd, 2008 at 9:40pm

Hey gang, here looking to see if the collective wisdom here has any advice for my little girl's ear ache. She can't sleep and she is crying hard "My ear!"

Not only would a remedy help my little pumpkin's ear, but it would also help her daddy's heart!

Anyone?

UPDATE:

Well the doctor found an infection, but not a typical ear infection. I forget the name but it can get nasty and turn into walking pnemonia. The pain she is having - get this - is from blisters on her ear drums.

We got some pissed antibiotic and some drops to numb her ear drums before bed and lots of children's pain reliever.

On the plus side mommie got to take a sick day to spend with Taylor and they had some fun painting her nails. She got to pick her own dinner tonight (mini-cheeseburgers) and a movie we will watch later (Land Before Time). When daddy got home she fell asleep in my arms on the couch super-snuggle-style (which I have not gotten in a LONG time, now that she is a big girl going to school) and we ened up taking a hour and half nap together.

Thanks to all well-wishers and vibe-senders. If you got a free minute please send some more, around 8 pm tonight!

What Potter? Not "oxygen?"

Seriously, Jamey, chances are she's got an inner ear infection. A doctor will need to look at her and most likely prescribe antibiotics. I had a plethora of those when I was her age.

Well.. UNTIL you can get her to a doctor (since its late now), you may need something to hold over until the morning.
Not sure how little she is, but when my daughter was 9 mos. til she was about 8, she had a lot of ear infections.  My routine for her was, with something in her stomache (cookie, apple juice) give her some children's Motrin, or children's Advil, and a mild decongestant, so that she could calm down and go to sleep until.  Also, sometimes warm tea helped move (just a little) any fluid in her ear from to the infection, down her throat.  I sometimes gave her a warm towel to her ear which was soothing to her.
If she had fever and the Motrin or any of these "until" remedies didn't help, we went off to the ER.  Ultimately, she got a decongestant and some antibiotics (which I loathed) which were necessary because it always turned out to be an ear infection.

Pepp

Poor kid, good luck!

I used to warm up some olive oil and with a medicine dropper drip several drops in their ears, keeping them in a prone position till it absorbed down the canal.  Then I would turn on an electric heating pad to about medium and put it on my lap with them laying on it on the affected side.

The Pediatrician I had at the time told me to do that if I couldn't get in to see him right away.

I hate it when kids hurt.  Just hate it!!!!!!!!!

Definately take her to the doctor. One night when my son was about 18 months I put him to bed. By 10:00 he was crying. When he sat up it stopped so I put him back. We repeated it for awhile until we gave up and the pediatrician met us in the er. He had perforated eardrums on both sides. It would be good if you can wait until morning but you may be heading for a late night er trip. When they lie on those sore ear canals it just makes it worse. Good luck!! Poor little one!!!!

If it's the outer ear with no congestion, it's probably swimmers ear (outer ear infection) and they sell the remedy over the counter.

If this is the case (like the ear you sleep on and it stays moist all the time) than that's the cure.

Unless things have changed, I'm willing to bet that when you take her to the doc (tomorrow, I'm sure--the crankiness will drive you to it), you'll get the pink stuff.  Amoxycillin.  Usually gets rid of an ear infection right away.

We got to know the pink stuff pretty well back in the day.  Until then, a heating pad and some tylenol should make it feel a bit better.

Poor little kid.

Best,

George

We get it at the Vets for half price.  Now why would they give critters bubblegum flavored antibiotics?

Wow. Thanks gang. I hear the love, which is great as it balances out the cries of pain. I am such a wuss when my kids hurt, esp my girl.

After a few trips to Walgreens for some of the mentioned items and a few ideas of my own (chewing gum for one adn some stickers) I think she finally is asleep again, for how long is anyone's guess. Mommie has her in our bed and is got her propped up to keep the pressure of lying down off her ears.

Looks like daddy gets the couch tonight. Tomorrow it is off to the doc.

As a reluctant parent of children that were not planned I would have found it surprising I would say the following (but not surprised after becoming a parent).

I'd rather start another CH cycle than have to helplessly watch my kids be in any sort of pain.

Speaking of, I spoke too soon about  the sleeping. It is going to be a long night.....

I hope she is not running a fever? If she is 101 or more you need to get her in to the doc now?

Hoping for the best because it tears you up seeing them that way in pain.

Rolo..

BTW; it takes at least 2 days for the swimers ear pain to go away if that's what it is.

Awww - the poor little darlin'.  Lord, I hate to hear of kids in pain.
I hope you're able to get her in to see the Dr. today.  Sounds like antibiotics will be required.

Give her a hug from this Canadian Grandma, would you?

Good lord, I just read this.....

Hot water tea.... Warm up about a half cup of milk and half cup of water -- put in some honey (or sugar -whichever you have handy). Crush up a baby aspirin in it and let the little one drink it.

Then a little warm olive oil (Like Linda said) and then cuddle her real close up to you with the ear up next to you...

Call Doc first thing in morning and get some pink stuff....

Don't forget to give lots of hugs from Canadian Grandmaw and Granny Barb

Hugs BD

P.S.  As a vet of earaches in my son... one thing I learned to look for (for infections - still do )-- swollen ear LOBES. If Buddy's earlobes were swollen - it was an infection - if not it was just an earache - might want to check that. Saved me a lot of trips to the doc.

I had this problem once with my Son. It was a build up in his ear that we could not see.

A few drops of Hydrogen Peroxide in the ear will clear it out. Follow with a Q-tip after she say the fizzy noise goes away.

Just a thought.

Well it is morning. I am beat tired. Got a Dr. appointment at 1pm today. From the looks of it, it appears to be an ear infection. No fever but she is stuffy so I bet there is fluid in her ears.

Oh yeah, lots of hugs delievered. All the love is super-appreciated!

Here's hoping tonight will be sleepfilled for all!

Oh yeah, Jimmers.

I know this Green Beret guy who told me that in their jungle survival kits (or whatever they are called) each one of his men got hydrogen peroxide.

He told me at the very first sign of a cold to put a few drops in one of my ears and lay on the other side (so the drops stay in) for about 5 minutes or until it stops fizzing and repeat with the other side. Then gargle with the stuff and hit the sack. When you wake up the cold will be gone.

I've tried this once before and it worked like a charm for me.

I tried it again to discover it only works for colds and not the flu.

A little info for ya all........if you try it in the future report back on how it worked.

So why is H2O2 not sold as a cure for the common cold?

I'm just askin'....

My first thought is that it is only a buck for a lifetimes supply. Drug companies can't live on that.

I would also guess there is only certain circumstances where it will work. I don't think most people are disciplined enough to do something like this at the very first sign of a cold. Most people are not even aware when they are getting a cold, but mostly say "I think I am getting a cold" by the time they already have a cold.

AWW, i HATE EARACHES!! I was prone to them as a child........either infection from a cold, or swimmer's ear...I had one or the other most of the time.
When I grew up, I learned to put a drop of alcohol in each ear after a swim.never did really find a prevent for the old ear infection.. BUT, warm oil on a heating pad was soothing till the DR would prescribe that wunnerful bubblegum medicine.
Lots of hugs and kisses help, and.....this is important..she should have control of the TV clicker! At LEAST for the next 2 days while she recuperates........

I hope you sleep well.........
PF to both of you Kiss
