Excuse my enthusiasm, but what a GREAT convention!
Sep 5th, 2008 at 12:56pm

I know a lot of people think the Republicans are evil, and that our one and only savior Obama is The One, but I have to say I am really pumped up now that the conventions are over.

I have been reading a lot of liberal press and blogs.  The left is clearly unnerved over the fact that Sarah Palin is an instant hit.  She has revitalized the Republican party.  I have personally spoken to 3 Democrats who now say they are going to vote for McCain.

If you have not heard her speech, you owe it to yourself to give it a listen.  She hit a grand slam home run.  She was poised, confident, eloquent, intelligent and she didn't pull any punches.  Her role as the VP nominee is to point out how the Republican ticket is better than the Democrat ticket, and she did an excellent job.  She made more sense than any politician I have heard in a long time.  She is a better candidate than Obama in every respect, and it's sad, really sad, that the Democrats don't have anything better to offer the American people.  I know, I'm a terrible person for saying anything negative about The One, but I want more out of my president than a guy who can deliver speeches.  I want more than a guy who promises to raise taxes, accept defeat, grow government and increase entitlements.  WE are BETTER than that.  WE should demand BETTER.  McCain is better.  Palin is better.

As a disheartened and angry-at-the-party Republican, I was all but ready to sit this election out because my party had truly lost their way.  McCain and Palin are going to bring the Republicans back into focus and get back to the business of working for THE PEOPLE.  I believe them when they say they will eliminate wasteful spending and failed government programs.  I believe them when they say they will do 'all of the above' to reduce our dependence on foreign oil.  I believe them when they say they will end earmarks.  I believe them when they say America will not yield to terrorism or allow countries like Iran to have nuclear weapons.

This is change I CAN believe in.  This is the change I will not just vote for, I will evangelize.  John McCain may not be perfect, but he is a man that has proven his character by his deeds.  Sarah Palin has done the same.  What an awesome ticket!  Both stand up for things I hold dear to my heart.  No longer am I voting for the lessor of two evils, I am enthusiastically supporting the Republican ticket.

Sorry for the political outburst, but I can't hold it in.

The irony of that is stunning.

Sarah Palin asked for 31 different earmarks just this year alone, but you believe her when she says she doesnt like earmarks?

Sarah Palin signed into law higher taxes for the oil revenues coming from Alaska.  That was about 1 year ago.  And you believe her when she says she wants lower taxes?

Heres a quote from the Seattle Times:
Quote:
In 1996, when Palin was elected mayor of Wasilla, a city of about 8,000 some 40 miles north of Anchorage, she did not take part in the earmark process.

But by 2000, into her second term, the city had hired a Washington, D.C., lobbyist, Steven Silver, a former aide to Stevens, then the ultimate rainmaker as chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee.

"She was hungry for earmarks just like everybody else," said Larry Persily, who worked at the Alaska state office in Washington, D.C., until earlier this year. "Everyone was feeding at the trough."

Before she left office, Wasilla, with aid of the lobbyist and the blessing of Stevens and Rep. Don Young, got $27 million in earmarks, according to the nonpartisan Taxpayers for Common Sense.

During her fall 2006 campaign for governor, Palin appeared to embrace the so-called "Bridge to Nowhere," even after Alaska had been held up for ridicule by McCain and others for what was seen as a wasteful boondoggle, a $233 million bridge that would replace ferry service connecting Gravina Island and its Ketchikan airport to mainland Ketchikan.

In a debate, Palin said she would fight for the earmark to build the bridge. McCain and others sought to divert those funds to help fund Hurricane Katrina recovery. That prompted a threat from Stevens to resign from the Senate for such discrimination against his state.

It's really unbelievably ironic that you say you want more out of a politician than a good speech, but you love Sarah Palin because she gave a good speech which specifically contradicts her past actions.

Don't get me wrong, I am probably voting for her also.  It just seems like you are excited for the exact reason you say is not a good reason to get excited about.

More irony: you (and the McCain camp) try to paint Obama as a self-professed messiah, and now we hear that Palin's Pentecostalist preachers from Alaska have been preaching how God has cleared a path for Palin's rise  because those preachers made 'prophetic declarations' that 'unfolded the kingdom of God'.  As if some holy roller can use God as prayer genie by rubbing his belly with prayer, or finding a secret passage in the Bible that let men turn words to reality.

No need to debate earthly details on whether to build that multibillion dollar pipeline, Sarah told us that God told her It Must Be Done!!

Thanks, but no thanks. I think those who evangelize will find great success in getting the religious right back on board.  The buzz may energize others predisposed to vote Republican who have been turned off by the failures and demoralization inside that party.  Expect much less success with the swing voters who don't speak in tongues.

My point about wanting a guy who can do *more* than deliver a good speech was that she has done more.  What has The One done?  He delivers great oratory, I acknowledge that.  He knows how to pull on the emotional strings very well, and that is a great skill.  I want more.  Reagan new how to do that too, but he also *did* things.  My comparison here is Palin has done things (a lot of things) that I can applaud.  I can't think of one thing The One has done that impressed me.  Pointing the finger at Bush and pointing out his failures is easy.  Doing it eloquently whips up a crowd.  It doesn't tell me anything about The One, no matter who does it.  I want to know who I am voting for, and The One is an empty suit with no record of accomplishments that can tell me about his character, leadership abilities or judgement.  I find his responses on all topics to be the same old evasive BS that politicians in both parties give when they don't want to be pinned down on anything.

In direct contrast to Obama, Palin has actually been in executive leadership roles.  She has pursued corruption in both parties, and even gone up against corrupt oil even though her own family has ties to oil.  She has shown that she acts in accordance with her principles.

I think it is going to be interesting watching the next few weeks.  Sarah Palin is going to be torn to shreds, she has to be.  It will spell disaster for the the Democrats if America falls in love with her.  I hope she can stand the heat.  So far, she's looking pretty good in my opinion.

BTW, I've admired Palin from a distance for a while now.  I heard her mentioned back in Spring, and everything I have heard, I liked.  I have not based my opinion on any speech, but she did hit it out of the park.  I guess I am guilty of telling people to listen to her, which could be construed as asking you to base your opinion on one speech.  Sorry about that.

Well, Sara does deliver a speech well - I'll give her that one. She's "almost" as good as Obama. But ya'll just ain't been to as many Tupperware parties as I have.... that Super Woman image just ain't what it's cracked up to be.....

But we'll just have to wait and see how she handles one-on-one interviews and questions from the "regular" people in the crowds (if they allow her to take questions, which was discussed this morning by one of the big wigs in the Party in an interview).

Right now, I think I'd rather have a beer with Biden than Ms. Padin -- he just seems more "real" to me. I'll go back to my knitting now....

Hugs BD

It's called "convention bounce." It has quite an effect for a time. I'm sad that I can't vote for such a decent guy as McCain but he's sold out to the lunatic fringe which is also where Palin comes from.

It's incredile that the Republicans found somebody more in tune with Bush than McCain. I never thought it possible.

For me, it's simple: I want to prevent Republican vetoes. If Obama wins, Congress has a good shot at health care and more.

It's also interesting that McCain's bounce comes from rejecting everything but the war that the GOP has done for the last 7 years. He's acting like a conservative Democrat in many ways. They really dodged a bullet when Bush spoke only by satellite.

Call back in October. It ain't over till it's over.

I understand you dont like Obama, but how about those questions I asked about Palin?
Why do you think she will fight against earmarks when just last year she filed for 31 of them?
Why do you think she will fight for lower taxes when she raised the Alaska oil tax just last year?  She then decided to take that hard earned tax money and give an extra $1,200 to each resident of Alaska.  Wouldn't you call this a redistribution of wealth?
Or is that term just used for democrats?

B$....Me thinks that oil tax was on the oil companies and givin back to the folks.  Wink

"Oil companies in Alaska are paying more money in taxes than ever before. The state's oil and gas tax revenues for its just-ended fiscal 2007 topped $10 billion. That's twice as much as fiscal 2006 and four times more than 2004."

I'm a lucky Alaskan resident.  Have been since 1977.  I love it here.  And Gov Sarah Palin is showing the nation our attitude here.  I may not agree on how she stands on some issues, but her Bite is all Alaskan.

from the folks, to the folks, based on windfall profits.

Obama had an idea to do a windfall tax and give every American $500 or $1000 dollars.  He was blasted as a communist and it was labled a redistribution of wealth.

Palin charges a windfall profit tax and gave $1,200 to every Alaskan.  She is hailed as a true conservative.

I've discovered that trying to contribute to a political thread here is like pissing into the wind - you feel a little better initially, until your pants start to get cold and you realize that there's a big mess to clean up. Fuck it. It just ain't worth it.

Sorry, you guys can fight it out amongst yourselves. You'll never convince me you're right, and I'll never convince you I'm right. So we can just cancel each other's votes and leave it at that.

Actually Charlie, I have bigger fish to fry right now.  I just want to see live babies.  But, the political discussions do provide a nice diversion.

I am quite happy about the way it is shaping up though.  The One is on the defensive, and the left is playing right into the traps that the right has set.  It is great entertainment.

No matter what goes down in November, we will all still be family.  We will all still be Americans.  I will still have the same morals and beliefs I have today.  The universe will not cease to exist.  And most of all, I'll still love most of you (not Charlie, commie bastard Smiley )

Peace out.

p.s. incase the smiley is not enough for some of you, I love Charlie too.
