Some random questions...
Sep 14th, 2008 at 9:25pm

1.  How would you feel about there being no gun registration?

2.  How would you feel if the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) was eliminated?

3.  What do you feel about there being no US Dept. of Education?

We've had a nanny state for so long, these questions sort of scare me. Undecided

Mel,

I see everything as a balancing act.  There are plenty of areas there should be government oversight in, adn these area are some of those in my op.

The right want the private sector to dictate everything.

The left want government to dictate everything.

As absolute values this leaves the taxpayer the choice of dealing with either corporate greed or government incompetence. This means the results is the same even though it is gotten by different means: the taxpaper gets screwed.

Another problem is people do not fully understand terms before they use them or fully understand situations before entering discussions, so the process is doomed before it even begins.

[Edit] Just adding that I consider myself part of the word "people". Depending on where info is gotten from the same set of data can mean different things to different people. There is so much spin (varying from outright lies to slight exageration) and it changes so fast there really is no way to keep it all straight if one has to work a full-time job.

This sounds like a conversation that very well could have taken place 230 years ago.  People have been arguing these points since before the constitution was drafted.

Some think government should be there only to protect us from the free market and corporate interests.

Others think the government should stay out of the free market as 'regulated free market' is an oxymoron.

Does a corporation have constitutional rights?  Or are constitutional rights only for citizens?

1. I would not like that.  Vehicles are registered, why can't guns be?

2. I would not like that one bit.  Corporate interests to make money on food and drugs far exceed their interest to make good food or good drugs.

3. I'm not sure about the DOE.  I think there should be federal standards at least, and states can go above and beyond if they wish.

1.  How would you feel about there being no gun registration?  Well, most of mine are registered, but not all!  The only problem I see with gun registration is if we ever get an idiot who thinks that the government should sieze guns.  Also remember, most crooks don't register their illegally owned firearms.

2.  How would you feel if the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) was eliminated?  I don't think eliminating the FDA will serve a purpose.  *It* does protect the consumer.

3.  What do you feel about there being no US Dept. of Education?  Limit the scope, but don't eliminate the program.   There has to be some type of federal guidelines at the most basic level.

There isn't any registration in my state. People do need to register to carry concealed weapons, but weapons themselves are not registered.

I would rather that they do the job they are supposed to do.

I'm ok with that.  The local communities are where the action is, and the states can set minimum standards. No real need for a federal agency - maybe a tiny office that gathers statistics - less than 1% of the current budget.

The outer boundary of what we currently believe is feasible is far short of what we actually must do.

Gun registration? Never had to do it in NY except for handguns so far as I know. Impossible to do anyway.

No FDA? There might as well not have been for the last 7 years. Industrial lobbyists and deliberate underfunding are what we have at the moment. We are paying for it every day with unsafe drugs and more. The FDA that we know of today got its teeth under Theodore Roosevelt and it saved a lot of lives.Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register

No DOE? Bad idea. There should be something to at least act as guidelines. As long as it exists anyway, it can be given some teeth when necessary or not. If it were gone, it would become a decade long battle with iffy results to reinstate. Keep it around at least.

Where did this come from Mel? It sounds like some kind of Libertarian thing except for the FDA question. I can't imagine even Ron Paul not wanting something like it. Did you get this from some email or somesuch?

Thanks any Mel. It got me warmed up as you can see..... Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register

The Constitution Party is today's Moral Majority and headed by some guy named Balwin who is the MM former director. I forgot the first name. He is a graduate of Liberty University which was Jerry Falwell. The other day, he stated that Falwell was his mentor. It's rabidly pro-life and anti family planning.

Fun!

I know what you mean Mel. It sounds good, doesn't it?

I'm always wary of third parties that self-describe themselves by using the Constitution in their designation. I find they usually have some specific agenda that is snipped out of one ammedment or two and most often not concerned with the document as a whole.

Sad to say that I only know of "Utopia." Maybe it's on line somewhere. Probably is.

I would be very upset and angry if 1-3 were gone.  I think we need them there to keep things in check.
