Its where we used to hang out and chat in the old days. A lot of us old geeks still do. Most users don't know how to get to the USENET though. A good thing, it is sort of like the wild west there. A noob can be pwnd in a hurry there.

...so there IS an irc channel?

I think IRC is superior to many other forms of real-time chatting. It's easy to just log in and out, stay there for a long while and also see the history of the discussion. Other good things too, like styling the chat windows, having many of them open to separate channels, so on.

Linda, I have the same effect, although you have been here far longer than me

It also became a part of Hacker jargon, and the scriptkiddie, cracker, warez world.

In this case it means what you describe your computer is in another thread, owned by someone else.

It surprised me that you used the media's bastardization of the term Hacker. At least you didn't capitalize it.
