Finland in mourning: school massacre number 2
Sep 23rd, 2008 at 1:06pm

Another sad day in Finland's history.

22-year-old student, Matti Juhani Saari, killed 10 people and shot himself into head this morning. Saari died later on to this fatal head injury. The authorities have not yet revealed the amount of the wounded.

Saari also started several fires at his school and posted several videos at YouTube. The Finnish police had actually investigated Saari's videos and he was questioned about them only yesterday. Saari's gun was new and so was his licence - he got his temporary gun licence only last month.

This is the second school shooting incident in Finland during the course of one year; the first one took place in November 7, 2007.

I wish we as a global society could figure out a way to keep scum like this from escaping the cowardly way. If they're going to take out completely innocent people, they should be required to take the punishment.

Yes, prayers for all the friends and family of those cheated out of a full life on God's green earth.

It may be a cowardly way out, but the last time a death penalty was carried out in Finland during peacetime was in 1826.  I would prefer the coward take himself out if the courts can't administer proper justice.

It is a very sad day for Finland.  This guy was a ticking time bomb, legally armed.  Now, the Finnish people will surely face some kind of stepped up gun control (cause that'll fix everything).

News broadcast just revealed that 3 people were wounded.

The whole incident lasted an hour and a half. 9 victims were at the same room, one was found at a hallway.

The shooter's motives are unclear, but he had left some sort of note at his appartment. The police said that the content of the note will remain secret for the time being.

Right now the priority is to identify all the victims. Then comes figuring out why this happened and what can be done to prevent these tragedies. The discussion about making gun laws more strict than they already are has begun.

In cases like this, I'd almost prefer the bad man be forced to face the families of those he killed during sentencing. Then lock him away for life with pictures of his victims and their families attached to the walls.

Sympathies go out to the families of the victims. Sad

I read that the shooter had issues with starting fires and was on YouTube shooting a gun 5 days before this happened?  God, if only people would act right away to suspicions!  Better to be wrong and embarrassed than nothing investigated and acted upon.  So sad!

He WAS investigated, for exactly those things.  In fact, that's why you know about it.  They visited his house only yesterday, and found his gun.  He had a license, and hadn't been accused of anything, so they couldn't do anything but wait for him to do something.

What would have stopped this?  That's a hard question to answer.

This is what makes it so tragic, but really, what can you do?

Sandie,

We saw it on the news earlier this day and were really shocked, our jaws fell open as we realized it haden't even been a year since the last similar horrorshow in Finland.
I'm sure over the course of the evening there will be more on this tragedy on TV.

Our thoughts go out to all the Finnish people and in particular the families involved.

A sad day indeed.

Pascal.

What a horror story Sandie.

My thoughts and prayers for the families.

What every happened to tipping over gravestones or trashing a school room? You'd think that would be enough.

I am so sorry to hear yet another tradgedy. Lisa's university just opened a newly remodeled education dept. The security is so tight the students can't even get in to see their professors anymore without going through several steps. But what's the choice? Something has to change but it doesn't appear to be. Sad
