Anyone with a spare monitor?
Sep 30th, 2008 at 3:44pm

Just as I lose my job, the monitor on the kids desktop computer goes on the fritz.  It powers on but the screen stays black and the green power light just flickers.  It was working fine yesterdaymorning, then in the afternoon... poof.

It had been acting funny in the last month or so as in taking 10-15 minutes to get an image at boot up, but yesterday it just went completely black during an idle period.  Shut the whole thing down twice, and then over night and this morning booted and nothing again.

I baught this new less than 2 years ago. What else besides being burned out could be wrong with it?

Do you have a good monitor from another computer to plug in to see if it is not the computer's viseo interface that went bad?

No...if I had another one I wouldn't be asking if anyone had a spare.  My computer is a laptop.  Not sure what a vieso interface is.

Plug the suspect monitor into the laptop and switch to dual screen.....that will tell you if the desktop monitor is bad.

I have an old monitor but its not even worth the cost of shipping,  if you ever come to Holland,  MI its yours.  I am sure you already did this but have you checked all the cables to make sure they have a good connection?      Phil

Should be in your display properties....right click on your desktop..select properties......then the settings tab.

Nope...the monitor is still black...with the green light blazing.

Guess it's a goner.

Used monitors are a dime a dozen......call a few PC shops in your area...or Goodwill......should be able to score one for under 20 bucks.

Thats my plan....time to get on the horn.

Thanks for the input guys.  Shame a sylvania flat LCD didn't last 2 years, but I can't be pickey about what I find out there.  Not like I can just buy new.

Redd, if it's any consolation at all, I had an old box-style monitor. My cat used to sit on top of it and try to chase the cursor while hanging over the face of the monitor. One day, something irrritated his digestion, so, he hurled............all over the vents in the top of my monitor. Instant meltdown!!!!
Flat screens are nice......... especially coz the cat can't sit on top anymore....now she sits in FRONT of the kb as I type.........

None of that means much, I know, but I DO hope you find a good serviceable one 'on the cheap'!

Darn it all... I just gave away a killer flat panel monitor (with built-in speakers).

Just to be sure though...

Is the cable to the monitor built-in or is can it be completely detatched?  Those cables can go bad (not often, but it can happen).

Next, try hitting Fn-F7 (function key pressed while also pressing F7) on your laptop with it connected to the video port.

I tried this Shawn, and the laptop screen went to a half bright screen like I was in power saver mode and hasn't recovered.  I'm going to try to reboot and see what happens.

Yep, now the laptop is all screwy I can barely see the screen on this thing.  I can't find where to adjust the bright or contrast either.  I can't be without a working computer if I'm to be looking for work.

Now is NOT the time for everything else to go to hell.

Redd,

The laptop switches between video sources when you hit Fn-F5.  You should be able to switch between 3 modes

1) output to laptop screen, no output to video port
2) output to video port, but no output to laptop screen
3) output to both

So, give that a shot.  It also sounds like it's possible that the monitor is working but just isn't at a compatible resolution with the laptop.

Try switching the video again and you should be back to normal on the laptop anyway.

Well I figured out that if I fn+f8 I get a brigher screen...that helped the laptop.

But Dyl and I went to wallyworld and put a cheapo monitor on my credit card.  I did get my UE letter to let me know what I'll get per week, and it's 50 bucks a week higher than I expected.  That will make a difference in what I'll need to cut.

Between the UE and food banks I should make it till I can get a new job.  In this volitile market, it could take a while.

hey,

If you didn't open the montior take it back.

I can send you a 15 lcd flat screen for free.

Well you have to pay for shipping, or pick it up someplace i will be or whatever.

I'd ship it for free except I am thinking I am in the same boat as you. I heard tomorrow is the announcemnt that my offices are closing and I should "start looking". There is a chance something will open up for me but I am not optimistic about it happening.

Let me know if you want the monitor or if you opened up the other one or not.

It will be hard to get to sleep tonight............

I can always take the thing back.  I kept all the packing materials.  Let me know what the shipping would be, I think there are standard flat rates.  Keep me posted on your situation and we can take it from there.

Don;t let your cats sit on the top of your crt monitors!

Lots of radiation come out of there. Montior fronts are supposed to be screened so the radiation doesn't project forward but the sides, top and back there is a good deal of exposure I guess.

Why do you think us computer guys are all bald?

Pegg - Its on its way!

Don't worry about the shipping, it was way cheaper than I thought.
